Anyone have an opinion on this media. I usually use Sony made in Japan, but this was on sale for $17. Just wondering if anyone had probs with it?

I purchased these earlier tonight, but whenever I try to burn it asks me to insert a writable disk. I have a Sony DRX-710UL burner. I'm not sure what the issue is...any ideas. I was thinking it was because my burner is 8X and the media is 16X (although it does say up to 16X). I'm getting frustrated, and don't know if it's the media or not.

I'm personally boycotting all Verbatim media, and I urge you to do so too. Verbatim spent the last few years rebuilding its image as a reliable distributer of quality media, but once again, unable to resist the temptation of higher profit margins, they are outsourcing to CMC, Moser Baer, and Prodisc - shipping the same garbage that Memorex has been. You think you're buying discs made by Verbatim just because it has the MCC manufacturer ID code? Well, they are probably made by Prodisc and CMC now with the MCC tag. Screw Verbatim. I'm only buying Fuji 'Made in Japan' and ordering Taiyo Yuden discs from now on.

@Dogbomb - i keep reading that kind of thing over at cdfreaks. I've been very lucky with all my Verbs but it does sound like Verbatim are playing silly games. As much as i love Verbs if i get stung i'll drop them like hot embers and go TY myself. Until then i'm buying up as much Verbatim TYG02 as i can afford, just in case.

i'm getting involved in as many Verbatim threads as i can over at cdfreaks..

ps i'm sure i've been reading murmurs of Maxell using CMC too, for some discs, can't remember exact details, or was it Fuji. i think it was Maxell...

I got a 100 pack spindle of Office Depot's sale for $35 on the verbatim data life plus +16x and they are MCC-004. After testing them for PIE/PIF errors using dvdinfopro, the 8x burns are scanning far better than the 4x burns in my benq 1640. I still have to test 12x and 16x backups.

I did update all my benqs firmware.

With the Verbatim 16x, how come the slowest you can burn them at is 6x. Is it my burner, the dvds, or the program I am using(Roxio).

Jasper44:
Probably the burner's firmware version. Software also can cause this. DVD Shrink along with Nero gives me: 2.4/4/8/12/and 16x increments on these verbs.I also have the same option with those sony and fuji's on my benq 1620s using 8x Yuden000-T02 fuji and sony media. DVD Decrypter gives me 4x minumum,no 2.4x option on all my media.

What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

creaky, it's old news at cdfreaks that Verbatim has been outsourcing to other manufacturers, so you probably knew all of this already. It was recent news to me. Fuji already switched to Prodisc last year. Given that the prices for DVD media has dropped from $3 about 2 years to 30 cents a piece now, you knew they would start to cut corners by switching to cheaper makers. Believe it or not, I used to love Memorex because it was cheap and reliable. That was when they were stamped RICOHJPN. Now, you hear all these complaints about Memorex because they've switched to CMC, Infodisc, Moser Baer, and every cheap manufacturer they can find. It's happened to Verbatim now. I'm already reading a bunch of complaints about Fuji, and for someone not following the different manufacturers they outsource to, you'd have to think anyone making coasters with Fuji's Taiyo Yuden media was not burning DVDs correctly. That is until you find out they are made by Prodisc. I already have a few spindles left of Verbatims, so I'm in no hurry to stock up. But if I do ever see old 4X RICOHJPNs or Fuji TYs on the shelf, I'm going to stock up and worry about shelf life later.

@Dogbomb, i only hear whispers here and there, so this last week have started subscribing to cdfreaks threads more often. i've been a member there only since Feb this year but rarely post even though i've been reading stuff from there for many years. i have stayed away since actually joining up mainly due to their love of CMC, and in some of my few posts last week i got slammed a few times. That could also be because i'm fairly unknown there, and a 'junior member' or maybe i'm being 'initiated' as a new boy. Some of their senior member are ultra-defensive about CMC - all i say over there is that we over at AD see endless CMC-related problems, but you can't say that over at cdfreaks lol.

anyway, i've just done a stock take of my Verb tubs (Verb TYG02) - i got 56 tubs of 25 therefore 1400 in stock at the moment, might buy some more for the next couple paydays, that should be enough for a while.

Sorry to veer off the 16x +R original thread subject..gonna copy/paste some of this thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/253032#1420236
