Yeah i downloaded dvd shrink and was making copies of my backups and everything was working fine for about a month. Then i tried making a backup of my "Lords of Dogtown" and if messed all my stuff up. It cancels the burn whenever i burn dvds now and says "dvd shrink has made and error and needs to close" right in the middle of a burn. I have tried deleting the program and downloading another version of it and it does the same thing over and over.

Does anyone know what goin on?
Does anyone know another good free program that'll do the same thing that is eay to understand? If so please let me know....

Thanks,

Joe

Hi Joe. I have been looking aroung for an answer to my own problem and think I have come across yours recently. At the DVD Shrink Forum, Cynthia has many answers to technical problems inc. a list of 'problematic movies' which I noticed has your movie on it. It all has to do with ARcoSS protection, which if you download and use 'DVD43FREE 3.6.2' you will be fine. The service is free, it breaks the code easily and then is instantly ready for DvdShrink. Hope all goes well! Wish me luck with my own problems. Ciao

Hi again Joe. One thing I forgot to add which is rather important is that DVD43FREE 3.6.2 is only for Win2K and WinXP. I hope this still helps. If not, there are other links to cracking ARcoSS protection at the forum. Good Luck

You could try downloading the trial versions of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. Both excellent programs and work very well. I bought them both after the trial as I found that they were worth the money.

Not sure what is going on with DVDShrink however. During the burn process Shrink is incredibly CPU intensive so you should make sure that you are not doing anything else and you have as many programs that take CPU shut off as possible. You want as little as possible running in the background during the burn.

Trying to read the disc probably caused your machine to revert to PIO. If you insert a dirty, damaged, or protected disc that Winblows has trouble reading, it will switch from DMA to PIO which will cause problems with reading and burning. Delete the primary and secondary IDE channels in Devices (right click my computer, then left click properties, then left click hardware then left click device manager, then open the IDE/Atapi Controller button and delete both the primary and secondary IDE channels, Then reboot, Winblows will re install them, then go back to them open each channel up and click on advanced and make sure DMA is selected if it isn't then select it, you will have to reboot again. I wrote a little registry program that resets the counters in the registry, but the above essentially does the same. Good Luck!

goyard4x,
The problem here was the "Lords of Dogtown" as Shrink can not break the encryption and that is why that error was received. You have to use DVDFAB Decrypter or AnyDVD to bust it. Shrink has not been updated in 2 years and never will be.

You have one ofthe easiest programs to use if it is setup properly.

Below is a guide one of the members here wrote using all freeware to decrypt, compile and burn the DVD:

Yea I was talking about the reader drive, when trying to read a disk with protection eg bad sectors this will cause the error count to go up on the drive as it trys to make sense of it and eventually cause PIO mode, unless you have a program to deal with the protection eg AnyDVD. I know because I watch my counters carefully, and after I tried to read Lords Of Dogtown without using AnyDVD it trashed my count and dropped me into PIO. Thus the reason I wrote the regfile to zero the counters in the registry, and another reason why I prefer Linux. Hope this makes sense to you.
