lately my PS2 has been making these kinda grinding/clicking noises, both with original games and back-ups.

Would cleaning the laser maybe fix this? Or could it be something more serious?

It sounds like your laser perhaps. Mabye a clean qould help. Im not sure how you do it though!

mine started doing that before it went out on me.
But cleaning it and possible adjusting it may help.
Is it making noise and not loading games?
Or do you games load and play good?

They load and play fine, there's just an awful noise coming out of it periodically. At my local Blockbuster they have a laser cleaning disc thing I can buy, maybe I should give that a go?

I wouldn't recommend buying that. I read in a few threads that the brushes on the bottom of those cleaning discs damage the PS2 lense (not sure if it's true). I think it's best to clean in with rubbing alcohol and something soft.

i brought a xploder cheat disk off amazon (like action replay) for psx it says suitable for psx/psone/ps2 ive used it a coulpe on time on ps2 seem fine i have problem sometime booting cd game and sm cd run that they work fine if you have flip top u are going to get more dust build up due to it being easier to get on the laser

The same problem happened to me a while ago with my flip top ps2 all I did to fix it was just putting some weight on the fip top part. I put a book on it and it never made any noises after that.

Could also be a sign of cheap media. I use some Silverdisc Pro CD-R's to backup my PSX games, and my laser would make the awful clicking sound. I switched to Memorex (crap) CD-R's and haven't had any problems since. Try cleaning the laser with a Q-tip and rubbing Alcohol, avoid the lens cleaner kits.

I bought a laser cleaner for $10, seems to have solved the problem, no more bad noises.

The media is fine, I use Verbatim Data-life Plus.

If I have to I'll just go see my 'chip-guy', he's usually pretty good at repairing PS2's.
