Can someone please explain to me how they are able to detect if a PS2 disk is an original or a copy?

Please tell me what they are checking to determine this and why a patch can?t be written and applied to an ISO to bypass the checking process.

Why is a Modchip needed instead of a patch?

Thanks

Do you mean for online play? If you patched your backup properly and it's not Socom 2 or 3, you can get online with it. An unpatched games DNA's will give a random number when checked, the same thing that happens when you use the disc ID utility on a backup. That's why there are DNA ID lists on the internet, for people who "misplaced" their originals.

Not so much for online play. I'm just wondering how they detect that a PS or PS2 game is not an original disk. Why do you need a modchip in the first place? Do they write errors on an original disk that impossible to recreate with a CD or DVD burner? What does a modchip actually do that gets around the copy protection?

Thanks for your help and input.

Yep. You answered your own question. A modchip is wired into the motherboard and makes the PS2 bypass copy protection, making it think all games are originals. Every time the disc tray is opened or closed, the PS2 initializes a copy protection check on the disk that's inserted. It scans the BCA section of the disk, and a backup doesn't have this is, as it's impossible to reproduce on a commercial burner. The PS2 detects it's not an official PS2 game, prompting those dreaded 6 words: "Invalid disc, insert PS2 format disc." This is highly techical and I don't understand it completely myself, but that's pretty much the reason.

Most likely any game you download over PS2 or BT hasn't been patched. You can use Disc ID Insertor, Winimage, or Windip to patch the backup for online play.

20. Q. What are DNA's?
A. Any game made after 2003 for the PS2 that is online playable contains one or more image files that has a "disk
DNA checker." The online game server checks your game disk to see if it's the real thing or not. Thus, you have to discover which .img file on the game disc has the checker file.

without going into this in too much detail...original ps2 disk's contain information that cannot be reproduced with the use of a dvd burner, they are factory pressed
so unless you have a dvd press, there is no way to copy them as if they were originals
