Has anyone had success ripping red dvds?, I've tried nero, shrink, dvd decrypter, anyDVD, I'm gonna try DVD43 and DVDFab. Just wondered if anyone knew how to get around the protection.

They're dvd's that are completely red, top and bottom, except for the name of the film. I want to make a backup of an ex-rental dvd I bought from blockbusters, but everything I try, it fails on, I know the disc is fine as it's not the only one that does it.

Two that I've come across are closer and kung fu hustle. These were ex-rental so maybe it's just the rental companies that have these discs. As I mentioned I've tried AnyDVD, clone, shrink, dvddecrypter and Nero and I have the latest version of all of them. I've lent it to a friend of mine, to see if he can get past it, when I get it back i'll try DVD43 and DVDFab.

AnyDVD and DVDFab Decrypter can handle these movies. Can't remember if decrypter can handle closer & kung fu hustle w/o a psl file.
You may have bad presses - don't know anything about red dvd's - so maybe these are made with inferior quality?
What happens when you use the programs you listed? Any error messagess?

Closer region code 2 needs a PSL2 file. Kung Fu Hustle region code 2 - in some editions. You should be able to create a PSL2 file if you need one.

Right, I tried using DVDFab with DVD43 in the background and it decrypted but when I tried to use clone after in just threw up errors saying it couldn't sectors.
I tried DVD Decrypter with DVD43 in the background and that didn't work, here's an error I got and the log.

You need to rip in file mode - not ISO mode.

Ah Ok, I'm following your guide at the moment, when you get the first I/O error in DVD Decrypter, you say to press abort and delete that file and carry on to the next file, but if I abort it says to delete the iso and it ends the decryption, should I press ignore instead?

I'm stuck on this bit,

We now need to know the LBA of the problematic file.

Press the ' ' button to find the start LBA of the current Domain and pgcEdit will ask you for the location of your saved log file from DVD Decrypter. Locate it and and press open.

When I open the DVDdecrypter log file it says "First LBA for file VTS_02_1.VOB not found" Any ideas?

This is a toughy to crack. Here is the log file.

The value you need is 665273. You can input it manually. Sure you feeded it with the right .log file?

Yes, you should have problems - it's a rented DVD.

yeah, I spotted that, entered it and saved the file, opened up DVD Decrypter and when I tried to import it it said "Invalid or unsupported file format! Reason: Line 0 does not contain 'PSL'."

You need to output a PSL2 file from DVD Decrypter from the original DVD first. That file will include that first 0: row. That is the original PSL2 file you feed the plugin as source. The created new rows will be inserted into that one and the new PSL2 file will be generated by the plugin.

Yeah, just got it, decrypted it with DVD Decrypter but it still had the 'Pack Header Not Found' bit. Tried burning it anyway with shrink and it got to about 10% encoding and then said it ran out of memory. Any more ideas? off to bed now but i'll carry on again tomorrow. Thanks for all your help so far.
