I am new to DVD backups, having finally gotten a DVD recorder, a Sony DRX-500UL, I am backing up one of my DVD's and after ripping with DVDdecrypter, it has produced an 8gig Iso, this is a single side DVD, so why I am I getting so much data size in the ISO?, it also appears that after burning back the iso to a DVD+RW, I get a backup which will run on my computer, but wont on my DVD standalone player, the burnback with DVDdecrypter always finishes with an error, but its producing a finished product, I think.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

There are 2 types of dvd single layer (dvd5) and dual layer (dvd9).

Single layers are approx 4.7Gb in size and dual layers are approx double that.

The majority of commercial dvd's are now dual layers however there are still plenty of single layers knocking around.

Most blank dvd's are single layer format as the dual ones are unavailable (to my knowledge) as they are pressed rather than burned. There are also dual SIDED dvd's which you can get hold of aswell.

The disc you have ripped my guess is a dual layered disc so that would tie in with the large iso file you got.

What u need to do is strip out the unwanted extras/subtitles or re-encode to reduce that file to below the target size of 4.36Gb, as this is the normal size that can go on a conventional dvdr

As ur a newbie u will benefit from the guides available on this forum.

Cannot remember exactly where but ' seamonkey ' has an excellent guide which I found VERY useful.

The main software u need to reduce/re-encode would be any of these:

dvd2one - recommend for newbies - not free though. (only for movie)
ifoedit - good authoring program to strip and author - available as freeware
Tmpgenc - good for re-encoding

There are alot more out there but guides are very good, BTW treat them as guides as our pc and media are all different and u may need to juggle about with them.

Hope this gives you a small insight as this is exactly how I went about learning, join this great forum and there is plenty of help/advice available.
