After a successful shrink sequence, the movie will not play on all my DVD players. If it plays, the movie will always play on the computer I burned it on, it may or may not play on my laptop, and it may or may not play on my DVD player connected to the TV, This doesn't happen with all the movies I've copied. Some do play on TV DVD player.

Thanks for your time,

Richard

What's the brand name/ model# /and firmware version of your DVD-RW drive?

What's the brand name/format/and speed rate of those blank discs? Mainly the MID code.

Use this free handy tool to answer the above questions:

How fast did you burn them?

What program you using for DVD Shrink to burn? Nero/dvd decrypter/or CopyToDVD?

Do you use sticker/paper labels on the backup discs?

Usual culprits:
Media quality-crappy manufacturers
Too fast burn speed
Multi-tasking
Paper/sticker labels
Fragmented hard drive
Burn program issue
And many/many more!

Since your players and laptop play some of your backups, likely the top 4 culprits I listed.Something is wrong, but not major. We need to eliminate the media quality first.

If you could post a burn log, that would help also.Make sure you leave out the serial # if it is a Nero log. It'll be on top, starts with 1A20-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx or similar.

Do you use DVD+R or DVD-R ?

Depending on how recent your DVD players are, DVD-R's were designed to be compatible with pretty much all Standalone DVD players while DVD+R will run on approx. 93% of DVD players.

If you are using DVD+R's this could be your problem.

Just a pointer.

Saugmon seems to be offering the most probable explanation: consider burning slower on good quality media.

Computer: Intel Pentium D 3.0 Ghz dual core CPU, Philips DVD+-RW DVD8701, 1024MB RAM, ATI Radeon 256MB, Nero 6
Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

Not so for me! No more dash format because I booktype my plus format for superior compatability on stand alones/game consoles/and pc dvd drives!

Booktyping takes care of the majority of those no disc inserted errors because you fool those players into thinking they are actual dvd-rom format.

The answer to the burner drive model # will tell us.

I'm with Saugmon on this one...I will never use another minus unless they are given to me. A +R booktyped to DVD-Rom will give the most acceptable output of all the media available.

Pay attention to the list:

Paper/sticker labels

And to add to saugmon's list, check to see that your firmware is up to date...this is why your burner specs are needed.

@rishiom

And to concur further with Saugmon and LOCOENG -

If at all possible booktype to DVD-ROM, burn no faster than 4x, set your target size to 4300 (to keep from burning too close to the edge of the media).

If your burner does not have the booktype utility I would consider replacing it with one that does, especially if you plan to burn DVD's on a regular basis. Your sucess ratio will dramatically improve.

Thank you all for the good information.

Initially, I was using Sony media: -R 8x burning at 4x. That media worked fine in my component DVD player. Then I purchased Memorex +R 16x but burned at 6x. I just purchased Sony media again and the burns have been playing fine on the DVD player. I've even reburned movies from Memorex media to the Sony and that those have played fine.

I am interested in booktyping though. What is it and how is it done?

I'm using a Sony DRU800A drive and Nero burning software. I have also been using DVD43, DVD decryptor, and DVD Shrink.

Not familiar with the sony drives but basically you bitset the drive...making it capable of being booktyped. You booktype the media...only +R's are capable of being booktyped. When you booktype, you are writing an extra code to your blank which in turn tricks your DVD player into thinking that you've just inserted a store bought DVD-ROM.

Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Your burner is a re-badged lite-on 1693s and can booktype. You'll need to download this utility:
http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

That'll give you 3 different formats to find the right format for all your stand alones.Plus/dash/and dvd-rom

Booktyping is the changing of the plus format to dvd-rom,making them more compatable on stand alones. That's how I keep mine and they play just about anywhere I want to play them in.You can only booktype the plus format only.

Memorex suck! You never know who manufactured them until you open them up and the odds are high for the chance of cmags. Sony are very good in the 8x speed range. Those memorex are of the plus format,so that player may not like the plus format or the memorex.
