Hoping someone can help me with DVD problem. I?ve been successfully backing up
DVDs for some time. All of a sudden my backup discs are freezing/ blotchy skipping much like satellite does during rain fade. I am using DVD shrink to burn, and sometimes use DVDdecrypt for file creation. Always worked in the past. I have used a CD cleaner several times on the DVD burner to try and clean the lens. Can?t think of anything else to try. If anyone has any suggestions or has had this problem please let me know. Perhaps someone knows how to find out if this is a software or hardware problem.
Oh yeah, I have a TS H552U and I believe it is made by Samsung.
Thanks.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:
1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)
2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.
Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604
You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912
Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".
Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Thank you for your post. I am using Fujifilm -R and +R (8 times) which I have never had problems with before. I will try your recommendations also. Hopefully this will help.
Do you know how I can change the write speed? The dialogue box comes up automatically when I use Shrink.
Thanks again.

OK I tried bewitched with DVD Shrink.. slowed the speed to 2.5 and it worked.
I always thought the Fujifilm were good discs, but I guess not.
Can you recommend a good brand of disc for back ups?

Verbatim DataLife Plus disc's are of excellent quality.
So are Taiyo Yuden disc's.
You can get both of them online at www.meretline.com, usually cheaper than you can go to the store and buy cheap disc's.

Fuji is good media as long as you make sure that it's made in Japan (Taiyo Yuden)
And, exactly what program are you using to burn your DVDs? DVD Shrink does NOT have a burning engine in it. Are are using either Nero or DVD Decrypter?

Yes its Nero that is actually used. I haven't figured out how to use decrypter yet. I use decrypter to convert DVDs to files, then Shrink to encode and burn, through Nero of course.

JDSCOM, if you would like to use DVD Decrypter to burn, simply set your backup target in DVD Shrink to "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter". After it gets done encoding, it will automatically start up DVD Decrypter for you for you to burn. Just make sure you set the write speed (burn speed) at 4X or lower.

Hi,
Can you tell me how to get to the BackUp DVD screen in DVD Decrypter? I'm using version 3.5.2.0 and I can't figure out how to get to that screen. I'm having the same problem with skipping and it's driving me nuts. I've tried many different brands of DVD +R, DVD-R and I still have the same problem.
