Are you using adhesive labels on any of them by any chance?

Sounds to me like you are doing things correctly. As temj asked. Are you putting labels on the discs?

Are you multi tasking while ripping/encoding/burning? Is the firmware for your drive up-to-date? What are your system specs? Give more details and you will be sure to get help!

Why not use DVD Decrypter to complete the burn?

Your firmware version is on the first line after the listing of your burner. Look at mine for example: NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A 1.F1 (ATA), 1.F1 is my firmware version.
This is a link to the HP firmware updates in RPC1, and I don't see your drive there: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=37

You can set the burn speed in ISO write mode, in the bottom right hand corner as shown.

Here is a alternative program that is designed just to tell you what version of firmware you have. It is located here:
http://flashman.rpc-1.com/Firmware/DVD-CD_firmware_detect.exe

Here is a screen shot of the program:

I've had this same problem with my older Samsung DVD player. I've found that DVD players that have "progressive scan" play copied DVDs a lot better. It also helps to have a multi format player. Oh yeah, I know some people who's DVD players respond better to DVD-R better than DVD+R discs. DVD-R has been around longer so older players are more likely to play them.

A DVD+R that has a booktype of "DVD-ROM" are far more compatible than DVD-R.

(Before booktyping was available, yes you were right, DVD-R was more compatible than DVD+R.)

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). @metj

I noticed we have the same drive, but different firmware versions. Am I just using a different hacked version than you? Or is it time for another upgrade for me?
