Not all dvd burners support this booktyping feature. Some have to have a utility and others may need a special hacked firmware.

What is the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?

Yes.... only DVD+R/DVD+R DL/DVD+RW can book type or change the bitsettings into DVD-ROM.

Nearly all Sony/Lite-On, Plextor, BenQ, Nec, Pioneer and LG can book type if you have the right firmware or hacked firmware, and or a book type utility that supported your burner.

Here is a good one:

DVD+R hands down..!! Yep, that's right.. DVD+Rs for me all the way, especially book typing them into DVD-ROM (the universal dvd format).

Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell DVD+R book type as DVD-ROM = play in all dvd players = top notch media = longevity = free of worries.

If Nero does not display booktype setting in drive options while a blank DVD+R is inserted, it will not booktype.

I have an NEC ND-3520 and have great results on my players.

I would like to try booktyping and see if I can improve playability on my inlaws old player that won't even read my discs.

Does booktyping reduce quality in any way?
Is there a firmware upgrade to allow booktyping for my NEC or do I need a hack?
If a hack, can it be trusted and is it stable?

Also, OT, I started printing with my R200 and wow, so cool.

thanks.

Bucky,

Booktyping/Bitsetting DVD+Rs using yout NEC burner is possible and will not decrease the quality in any way. As a matter of fact, it might even make the quality better, as the DVDs will now be more compatable with home players.

For NEC booktyping firmware and directions go on to this site:
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/

You might also want to check out for following threads, as they offer alot of infor on this topic:

Good luck.

Thanks a ton. Sorry for being lazy and not looking through the threads.

I have to get back to work and will try later.

What program will you use to confirm that it worked as expected and wrote as a ROM?

Will DVD infopro work for this?

Thanks.

I have one question and then I believe I am ready to download and install my new firmware. I went to the site

http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/3520/

I currently have the Original 3.06 on my drive.

The options for Liggy's 3.06 bitsetting firmware gives three options: Orig, Fast, and RPC1

Are these completely different animals altogether? I just want to bitset for ROM. As long as I am doing this, is there one version that will give me all options even if I don't use them all?

I live in US and don't really see the need for region free(RPC1).

Thanks.

I couldn't wait any longer and finally took the plunge.

I used the "orig" version of Liggy's 3.06. I burn at 4X and don't care about region free at this point.

I was able to play my backup as a DVD-ROM flawlessly on my Inlaws player that would not even touch any previous backups. Thanks to all who provided the assistance.

Thanks.

I'm using one of liggys firmwares on my nec-6650a, you probably want the RCP1, it fixes riplock, and region settings as well as allowing you to change the booktype settings. Also I used NECWinFlash and whenever I want to change my bitsetting again, I can use that to reflash for another type.

As I understand the links on the Liggy page, they offer the original from the company (version of course is dependent on your drive).

They also offer in many cases different options of their versions. In the case of my drive they offered three versions.

orig: main this this does is change bitsetting (maybe more)
fast: bitsetting plus adjust speeds outside of OEM
RPC1: bitsetting, speeds, and region code removal/adjustment.

I chose the orig because I don't really care about the other features. I did back up my OEM original firmware with a dump using binflash. Very easy and works like a charm.

Good Luck.
