Hi, just signed up on here and I know it has been discussed in various forms. My father in law has bought a DVD recorder, he wants to tape films and watch them upstairs on his Sony DVD player, if you finalize it then thats it you cant copy on it anymore. So what I want to know is that if he wants to watch a dvd upstairs which he has recorded on does it have to be finalized?

I have a couple of DVRs. The show being recorded can usually only be watched on the recorder when it is not finalized. Once finalized no more data can be added to the disc, but the finalizing makes the disc readable on most any DVD player. If i understand your question correctly, The Sony player is upstairs, and that is the one your father in law wants to watch movies on. The recorder is downstairs, and you never mentioned the brand name. The disc has to be finalized on the downstairs recorder so the upstairs Sony can view it. Short answer YES.

His player downstairs was a panasonic, he has just bought a new player but i dont think he realises he will still have to finalize dvd's. He has just bought a LG player.

Both of my DVRs are panasonic. I took a non finalized disc out of my panasonic, and looked at it on the PC. The file has an extension of .tao . I know there are some programs that can edit a .tao file, but they usually are not found in stand-alone players. Now if your father in law had a panasonic DVR both up and downstairs, then he could watch the un-finalized discs on either one. I have not had much luck with the panasonics, and would not recommend them. They have problems with their HDs. Mine limp along, but i use a PC to do most of my movies on now.

Thanks for that, do you think then he would benefit from having the same stand alone player upstairs as the recorder or will this make not a lot of difference

Shouldn't make any difference. Once the disc is finalized, it should play on any player, no matter what the brand name. I think it booktypes to DVD-ROM, will have to check that. I know my panasonics can only record on DVD-R, but will take a DVD+R if it is finalized, and booktyped to DVD-ROM. DVD Identifier will tell you the booktype of the DVD along with many other programs, Dvd Decrypter, Nero, Dvd Info Pro, and probably others.
I did a google on dvd finalizing, and this link seemed to cover the basics:
http://www.manifest-tech.com/media_dvd/dvd_recorders.htm and here is one on panasonic but maybe not your specific model:
http://www.audaud.com/audaud/MAY04/component/comp3.html
and a panasonic detail on finalizing and what it does:
http://panasonic.com.au/content/library/files/F001567.pdf Wow, the power of Google. I could search further, but i think those will cover it. Good Luck.

Can one use +RW discs, in order to use over again? Will they also be booktyped to dvd-rom?

Yes, I found +RW media to work better than +R media finalized in my players. Some wouldn't read my finalized +R but all would read the +RW from my RCA recorder. All I use is RW media in my recorder.

Thank you for the information. With the price of recorders coming down in price, purchase would make a good Xmas present. This was the only thing holding us back - the ability to watch in other players.
Just one more question...are they easy to program? Let's say if one can program a vcr, is a dvd recorder just as easy?
BTW........If I had the "Movie" channels, commercial free, and I recorded it for later viewing.........Is this considered piracy???

Most of the recorders have a viewing "guide" and schedule from which you can choose the programs to be recorded nd the frequency, whether once or weekly, etc. They can also be manually set to the time and day. I'm not a lawyer and can't speak to legality of recording and viewing later. I suppose it's illegal if there's a warning to not record; otherwise ?. Try before you buy in a store is the best advice I can give. Personally I don't use mine very often now that I have three digital hard drive recorders. I'd think about going that direction.

Keep in mind, i am not a lawyer, but i do play one on TV. No just kidding. :) I think all you are doing is time-shifting. If you had the movie channel, and lets say for the sake of argument you paid for it, then all you are doing is changing the time you watch something you paid for. Recording a movie on at 2am because you are a day walker, and are now alseep is ok i think. Now, if you invite your buddies over, and charge them admission to see this taped show, or go out and sell the discs, then that is illegal. In between those lines tread lightly. {P2P file sharing} People always used to tape tv shows, radio programs, you name. Just my 2 cents, of non lawyer talk. Lawyers.. they can take a simple subject and have it so messed up, you can't even recogize the original meaning or intent by the time they are thru with it. Society needs them i guess, but..Party of the first part this... (Defiant jesture censored for public forums.)
