So I've been looking into this for a while and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell happened, or what to do about it. I really don't want to have to replace my burner. It's pretty sad if it got permanently fried.
I was burning a cd with probably the worst burning software I've ever used - Nero Xpress. Earlier in the day I was trying to burn a video DVD, and it was lagging horribly. I never WAS able to successfully burn it, either.
So later in the evening, I'm burning a data CD. at 100% write and 98% buffer, the program hangs. I have to force quit Nero XPress.
So I immediately try again. But it can't tell that I have a blank CDR in there.
I try another.
I try a BURNED CDR. Nothing. No error message. I can hear the drive trying to read it, running in circles, yet the computer acts like I never put in a disc.
Audio CD. Same deal.
But a blank DVDR? Reads it fine. A video DVD? Fine.
I'd give you guys a detailed readout of all my system information, but I'm afraid I have no friggin clue how to retrieve that. Let me know and I'll get you any details you need.
I really hope someone here can help me out. If someone can crack this one, I'll owe him/her/them an eternal blood debt. For reals.
Thanks so much guys.

i had a Lite-On. It broke. I replaced it with the warrenty. Got another from them, had continuous problems burning/reading/speed/ etc.. it sucked. I threw it away and bought a Sony, havent had a single problem.

I'm really not sure what version of Nero I was using, we've since uninstalled it. It was a really bare-bones Nero Xpress package. I just now installed a trial for Nero 7. Still not responding to CDs, though.
I'll try updating the firmware, thanks, I'll get back to you once I've done that.

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT
post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

I don't have any solution to offer but thought I'd mention that a very similar thing happened to me using XPress. Program locked up at one point and after that my Samsung burner never worked right again. New blank CD media would just spin and never be recognized, it wouldn't read CDs that it had written itself, some DVDs kinda worked. Upgraded firmware, no effect. I returned the drive for a replacement and this time the writing capability crapped out in about 2 weeks.
I thought it was just a terrible drive and ended up getting a new NEC drive. Both XPress and Burning ROM yielded absolutely horrible burns. I thought oh great, I bought another lemon, but just out of curiousity I tried burning with Ashampoo's software. The discs came out perfectly.
Long story short, I'm pretty sure Nero hosed my drives. Maybe there's some weird incompatibility that messed things up or maybe my install is corrupted but I really don't think so. In any case, I'm done using Nero for anything.
Good luck getting your drive to work again, sorry to say if it's anything like what happened to mine it's probably destined for the junk yard though.

LepV... yeah that's sounding pretty familiar. Bad times. So far the DVD reading/writing still seems to be working... but it's really crippling for me if I can't use CDs on this system.
And gwendolin... the reason the log wouldn't indicate that I updated my firmware and Nero is because I only just yesterday updated them. After this burn took place.
Honestly, I'm completely in the dark as to what happened and if it's even fixable. It seems that this Lite-on I'm using is kind of garbage. I repeat that I believe this is quite sad that the thing got fried as a result of such a ridiculous little thing. But there you have it.
Again... If anyone has any ideas here, by all means, let me know. I'll try anything at this point.
