I have an iMac G5 1.8 GHz, single layer superdrive. I am constantly making "coasters".

I use MTR (Mac The Ripper) to rip the DVD.
I then use DTOX (DVD2OneX) to compress the ripped file.
I then use Toast 6 to burn the compressed file.

(Sidenote: I have also used Popcorn, which I like, and it did just as well as using DTOX and Toast 6. But for this problem and email, we'll stick to DTOX and Toast 6.)

But when I play the new DVD in my SONY desktop player, either 1 of 3 things happen:
1) the movie hangs, but pressing FAST FORWARD continues the movie.
2) the movie skips to a different section of the movie, or
3) the movie hangs and NOTHING will make it continue.

To clarify, the same DVD will not experience all three errors. It will constantly exhibit only one of the three. For example: DVD "A" will exhibit #2; DVD "B" will exhibit #3, etc.

I have used Velocity brand DVDs and switched to RIDATA. The RIDATAs are doing the same thing.

Lastly, I can play the MTR ripped file with Apple's DVD Player with no problem.
I can play the DTOX video file with Apple's DVD Player with no problem.

Is anyone having these same kinds of problems? What am I doing wrong? What could be the problem? Should I be looking at the media or perhaps the SuperDrive? (P.S. - I have TWO identical iMacs and they BOTH are making coasters.)

Thanks for any input.

Yes, they do. At least they seem to at least 95% of the time.

By chance, is there anyone online that lives in the Oklahoma City area?

If the DVDs play fine on the iMac you have not made any coasters and the source of your problems is your Sony player. How old is it? Have you ever cleaned its lens? What kind of media are you using - or +?
