xVid Codec - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/xvid.cfm

I wouldnt recommend trying to compress those files to fit both on 1 cd-r. There sizes are perfect for cds! Just burn them as data

You must have ac3 sound so, get the ac3 filter - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ac3filter.cfm

also those files are purposly made around 700mb so that they can be put on 2 cds!

Yes its possible but, the quality would suck, now i mean really suck as in the pixelation would be horrible! you'd like half to re-encode (which would loose a lot of quality) and would have to half the audio and video bitrates which means more quality loss!

You can use virtualdub to make a selection of the movie and save it as an avi with video and audio set at direct stream copy!

No thats an avi editing program! try this guide -- dont worry about the subtitles, you can just skip over that! http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/divx_with_subtitles_to_vcd.cfm
