Hello,

I've been lurking here for a bit, and found alot of useful information. However, I'm hoping someone can give me some insight as to why my latest probs are happening.

Hardware- Lite-On 1693S (used for read,write)
Mistumi DR6800TE (read only-drive taken out of equation for possible read issues)

Media- TY-DVD+R 8X (YUDEN000 T02)
Software-DVDShrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero..(burned with Nero & or Decrypter-)
Players-Kenwood DV705, AMW T352 (last was a freebie, but it actually plays backups better lol)

First a little history. I originally started backing up DVD titles on TDK TT02 DVD-R's...nothing but probs, found on the boards that the discs were crap...Returned...Picked up the above mentioned TY's, and so far so good with one problem. Movies seem to play fine, but when getting deeper into the movie,(guessing around 3/4 through) I'm experiencing some skipping. If I return to the menu at this point, and select the scene, it will come back and play the scene flawlessly. I've cleaned my lens on both stand alone players, same scenario. I've tried every variation I can think of to limit the causes...I'm still thinking media, but unsure...Also, I've set the booktype to DVD-ROM etc, and every variation there...Any and all info, speculations are greatly appreciated...

Other than the TY's, have you tried any other media?

Who knows, you might have gotten a bad batch, anything's possible.

Also, other than the players you have at home, have you tried playing them (burned disks) in someone else's player(s), maybe a neighbor or relative?

The one thing that I see not mentioned is your burn speed. What are you burning at?

The ty media is not likely the cause. It's great(not saying you could not get a bad batch, but unlikely).

You have 2 players that verify the same issues.First, verify those backups using the litey to play on your pc.Look at the general vicinity for the skipping. That litey should play it's own backups and they should look near original in quality. Let us know how they look.

Some other possibilities:

1) Maybe a bad batch of tys. Reduce that backup target since problems start. Using dvd shrink:
Open up dvd shrink
Edit
Preferences
Click dvd-5/scroll till you get to custom
To the right of custom, enter 4300
Click OK.

That'll be your new backup target to start with.

2) Compression.
Do you backup entire disc or main movie only?
Try keeping compression to a minumum like using re-author for main movie only and see how they look.

3) Burn speed: Some of this 8x media will overburn in our 16x writers if the burn setting is left at max.Another thing with this quality media,I've been getting better PI/PO scans at a faster rate of 8x compared to my 4x burns.

4) No multi-tasking. DVD Shrink will max out your processor during the analyzing and encoding,so you want every background program shut off.

5) Fragmented hard drive. Keep your hard drive/s defragged.

6) Paper/sticker type labels. Gotta throw that one in because many problems with those labeling systems, and the stand alones will pick them apart during playback.

7) Up to date firmware. Sometimes manufacturers can throw in an update to fix problems with certain media. This would be like fine tuning for certain MID codes so you can get a better burn.

8) Test those backups using a program like k-probe for your litey burner. Run a scan of some of your backups.Dvdinfopro is also another good scanning program.

Booktyping usally takes care of those No Disc inserted errors. This is when stand alones won't recognize a certain format of backups. The first 4 things I posted may take care of it.

Good Luck!

First, thanks to everyone for posting!!!

9mm-I'm burning @ 6x- as the Lite-On 1693S will not allow me to go any lower with the current media. (TY-8X DVD+R)

Saugmon-
1.The Lite-On plays beautifully...
#2 & #8 are the only things I haven't tried..so I'll give it a spin..pardon the pun...I have run the "quality test" in Nero, averaging a 93 score with low PI errors etc...I'd have to run it again on a backup to get exact figures....

A question though...-under burn settings on DVDShrink, would having "Burn at least 30mm DVD+RW high compatibility mode" enabled cause any unusual probs???

Thanks again for all the input!!!!

Try reducing your backup target to 4300 mbs, then you can increase it as time goes by.I keep mine set at 4360.This keeps the last millimeter or so of the outer edge from being burned. It causes a hair more compression.

Try main movie only and see how they turn out.

Here's the k-probe program for any litey/or re-badged litey owners:
http://www.k-probe.com/

I'd scan a few of those discs that freeze just to make sure.

Saugmon-

It was good to get a fresh perspective...I've burned a "new" backup, using 4300, movie only, @ 8x burn...Voila...IT WORKED!!!!

I'm a happy camper, as I really didn't want to have to keep sampling media...Thanks for all your help!! I really appreciate it...

Also downloaded K-Probe...Thanks!!!

That's some great news. Must be a bad batch of yudens,it happens. That MID code should be Yuden000-T02 so you may want to double check it.Also look at the dye side (bottom) of the disc for a code like: TG001159 or similar inside the dye to verify they are real tys.The japanese sony and fuji code as Yuden000-T02 and are some very high quality media.

Once you get another batch, from somewhere different, then you can take that target back up to 4360 mbs.

Once you get kprobe figured out,try some test burns at different speeds and see how those small errors look. The slow 2.4x speed burns have been causing me issues when it comes to re-ripping them.

Good Luck

I was afraid you might say that.lol(bad batch)...I checked the number on the bottom of the TY's-TG001162. Also the MID code is Yuden000-T02...From everything I've found, these should be the real "McCoy"...The online retailer stated they were original TY's from Japan...But we all know how that goes...I'll keep chuggin along. Thanks again for your help!!!

Your tys are 3 batches newer than my fuji tys! Taiyo yuden also makes some of the sony +1x-8x with the yuden000-T02 MID code. I've burned them both and they are excellent with my normal 4360 mbs backup target.

- the firmware for thr 1693S is lacking at the moment, this same problem is the case with certain Verbatim media too
