I wouldn't want to watch that backup. I prefer quality over speed thus rb/cce for me.

hows the quality? with that much speed i would think it wouldnt be that good, kinda like shrinkt5. ive tried this one before(shrinkt5) and it is very fast(under 15 mins to rip and burn) but i didnt like the quality.

That box has caused some problems for some people with particular movies, i.e Spirited Away. And I'm with Mort81, I don't care about speed that much, and I just go watch TV so I don't really care about speed.

And please, stop multi-posting, just edit.

On the enable overlapped I/O thing, in this thread, it stopped me cold, and almost made me give up on shrink.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234568
You can see the error message that stops Shrink from working. Now i know checking this box works for some ppl, so i am not saying don't do it. Just be ready for that error message, and know how to fix it, if other do attempt this. And if i have info, i will try to post it in one message if i can. Suspense is for movies, or tv shows. Ya have the info and you want to share it, spit it out. Looking at the thread post, i really expected to see Neph slamming someone for trying to sell some gimmic.
I can get an encode speed of over 15 000KB/s when i run from the HD, and the movie has little or no compression. All that is done without that box checked on shrink. Have a movie that requires lots of compression and quality settings ticked off, and that same encode speed will drop to 1,600 KB/s or less. Like GlueEater said, quality is more important than speed. Somethings goning to take 1.5 hrs to encode, i let it, and go to the other computer, or do something else. When that 1.5 hr encode is done, it is perfect, and rips of it only take 20 minutes or less because it is already shrunk down.
Now maybe the overlapped I/O works for you, i am just posting this because this forum will be flooded with ppl saying "Now i can't use shrink because i ran in to this error about overlapped I/O going on. Please help me.." Just a heads up for anyone wanting to try this. If it works, fine. If it doesn't un-check that box, and continue to use Shrink as before.

@MaxBurn - just replied to that Spirited Away link, can't believe i missed it before. But for this thread, what i will say is i don't recall ever using that setting - and now i most definitely won't be!

Hi creaky!
That setting seems to work fine for some ppl. I may try to experiment with it, and try it again on my upgraded system. Might work fine, just that last time kinda made me gun shy of checking just any setting. Seems the worst it can do is shut down shrink. You know that post is fairly old, it may have been the older version of shrink being used at the time also. I will check that overlapped I/O box on my Shrink setting and give it a shot. I do this in the name of science. If i fail, scatter my ashes in a desert somewhere. Wish me luck..:)

actaully its not the same, its slightly less in quality.Although that isnt much to be concerned with the more finicky members who are perfectionists will probably not go for this method.I could only get 13455 kbs

Well, i did not hit the shrink error, but i didn't get anywhere near 14,000 KB/s. and when you say

You can't mean burned also, unless you are going waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy over 4x. I call backed up, the whole process from start of original disc inserted to end of shrunk copied disc in my hand. The fastest i have had one go is something like 9 or 10 minutes and i was going waaaaaaaaaayyyy over 4x myself :). This may actually improve rip times, and i will have to give it some more tests. First time i run in to that old shrink error, im unchecking that overlapped I/O box, and going back to the safe and sure mode. Didn't have LOTR return of the king, so i couldn't do a true 1:1 test. The Aviator ripped and encoded/burned in 43 minutes which seems to be slightly better than before, but i don't think i am getting double my encode speed.

I too am not to concerned with the speed of the encoding process as long as I have a good result at the finish. I just go do something else until I hear decrypter finish chimes. :-}

Ok, i have ripped 6 movies now using the enable overlapped I/O, and i have not had a shrink lockup like before. My encode speeds seem to be slightly faster, higest was 11 000 KB/s, but nothing like 4 minutes. Yeah, if i wanted to do a 16x burn, i may get that speed, but speed isn't everything. Remember the tortus and hare fable??? Took movie Vampire Hunters ~17 minutes to rip and burn. That was at 4x burn speed, which took up 12 of those minutes. I am going to get LOTR ROTK and do a 1:1 test, just for giggles. Maybe this feature now works. Just look what it did to me on that older post i linked to though. I have modified my system since that time, and increased memory to 2 gigs, so who knows? I will keep that checkmark on for now. Shrink encode times are lightning fast compared to DVD Rebuilder Pro, but pro does a better job on heavy compression movies. Evil Dead 2 took 296 minutes to do on RB, but i had it running on another PC, and i let it do its thang.. Movie looks great. So does the same one i did with shrink. I guess i would have to have a bigger TV to notice any difference. 34 inch Sony Widescreen is what i used to view them on.

MaxBurn,

296 min is excessive even with dvd-rb pro/cce with a pc of your caliber. I can encode a 7.3 gb folder with dvd-rb pro/cce in about 120 - 140 min with my pc. Of course that doesn't include time to rip or burn so add 15 min rip time and 8 min to burn. There is a definite difference in video quality between dvd-rb pro/cce and DVD Shrink on my 52" HDTV especially on a back up requiring this much compression.

Hi mort81
That Rebuilder time was on an old celeron 2 ghz with something like 700mb of memory. I didn't do it on the pc in my sig line. On that system i found the ASPI layer was not installed correctly. I just fixed that, and will give Rebuilder another whirl. Every time i would run Nero info tool, it would come up yellow on my system aspi, i would check use Nero and it would turn green. Finally fixed it by dl of windows aspi and install of it. Now info tool is nice and green on system aspi. Probably will make a big difference in speed. Drives were always DMA on, ultra dma5. I check for PIO everytime things slow down even a little bit. Paranoid i guess.

I noticed you stated those times were on another machine after I posted and then reread your post. My bad. Your pc in your sig should out perform my pc since mine is only 533 FSB and you have double the ram. Your encode times should be under 2 hrs for most applications. Looks lke you should have it ready for the task. GL.

BTW if you ever want to make that litey SOHW-1633S a better drive there is a crossflash to SOHW-1653S f/w available for it. Made a much better drive out of my 1633.

@Mort81
I may just try that cross-flash sometime. I mainly use the lite-on for disc reads and use the LG for the burn. It reads like it is on fire. I've had it go as high as 14,000 KB/s on a disc. My SATA reads only get up to 16,500 KB/s. I am doing another movie on the other PC and it seems to be going much faster now that i got the ASPI thing fixed. I am going to have to do some more reading in the rebuilder forum. Seems like that program has lots of features and potential, if you know how to use it.

No, it took 4 minutes to encode LOTR ROTK then about 8 or 9 miutes to burn it.
