jmack17m ,
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a DVD Player vs blank media compatibility problem. What is the name brand of the blank media you used? We recommenfd Verbatim, Yaiyo Yuden , certain Maxells and certain Riteks blank media.

Go to te site below and input your Players name and model # and you will see what others used as blank media and if they had problems.

Some players can be finnicky about the media that they want to read. Have you tryed booktyping your media to DVD-ROM format. This can only be done on DVD+ media not the -R media.

Here is an good thread of information for you to study. This will help you understand the process: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46559

What burning program are you using?
What burner do you have?
Have you updated your burners firmware lately?

Firmware updates help your burner to recognize the newer media types.
Use the last link in my signature and find your burner and latest firmware.

Let us know the results.

jmack17m - Could you post a log file from Nero ?

To do so, go here: C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero
Look for a file named "NeroHistory.log"
Open that file up and copy the last log in it.
Then paste it here.

(Don't forget to remove/delete your serial number from the top of the log file. It usually starts with "1A2.-....-.....".)

Your PC is not recongizing your drive. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your drivers.

Your firmware appears to be up to date. Not sure if you can bitset this drive or not. Someone else could probably answer this.

This is some of the worst media on the market. Get some verbatims, Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, or Sony, Maxell, and Fuji (Made in Japan).

512 is usually the min amount of memory you should use. You need to find a way to free up alot of what you have by shutting down everything you don't need while backing up movies.

You are burning too close to the edge of this disc. Change your target size to 4300.

I'm sure I've missed something, but these suggestions should keep you busy for a while, until someone else stops by with more tips.

I used shrink and DVD Decrypter and ripped one movie and it played in my home dvd player. Every one after that wouldnt play in any of my dvd players. On the first try (when it worked) I changed book type to dvd-rom. I did the same for the other ones and it made no difference. Im stumped!!!

You may want to slow the burn process down as well. Looks like you burned at 6x which is not outrageous except that you used CMC media which is very poor quality.

Do yourself a favor and obtain some quality media. Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell etc. Not Memorex!

I did change media. I used verbatim DVD+R discs. It plays on my computer's dvd drive but not any of my home players. I only got one of the movies I tried to work. Did the same process for all.

@jmack17m

Did you make the other changes recommended? Burn Speed 4x, target size in shrink 4300? Booktyped to DVD-ROM?

In Decrypter (with a blank DVD+R in the drive) click tools>drive>change booktype, select your drive and click media type>DVD+R
select change media>DVD-ROM click change.

See Below:

Bit setting in DVDdecrypter will change the format of your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM which will make it more playable in standalone DVD players. Follow the following images through the sequence. (Remember to have blank media in the drive)

Click tools>drive>Change book type

Or instead of the above you could do this:

At the next window you select the drive tab that identifies your burner:

Here you select the media type that you want to book type.

Now you select the change that you want to make, in this case change to DVD-ROM

Click on the change button and you will get the success screen!

Click OK and you are good to go. Remember this will NOT work for DVD-R media.

This setting should remain in effect until you shut down your computer. I also perform this process prior to burning a backup in CloneDVD2 and it works!

When I changed the booktype to dvd-rom, the first disc I burnt worked and played in all of my players. immediately following i tried burning a different file, used the same process and that dvd wont play. Is is possible in repeating this process that I changed the booktype back? btw: I did change to 4x and shrunk to 4300. Cant understand whats goin on! It was suggested to me that my sony burner is a re-badged liteon. there is an option for the liteon but not the sony to change booktype.

With the Sony Burner I am not sure if it would change back after each burn or not. I know that it will reset once you shut down. In DVDdecrypter, after the burn is completed and you click the ok button, which says the burn was successful, if you wait a couple of seconds the DVD information will display on the right hand side of the window. It will tell you in that window the booktype that was burned. Check your burns.

Does that unit come up under the LiteOn tab?

When I get home tonight I will see if the new imgburn has sony's or not. You could download that burn program (updated decrypter without the ripping capability) from http://www.imgburn.com and check it out.

The same person who wrote DVDdecrypter is doing imgburn but did not include the ripping portion due to legal issues.

This is where I got the DVD Burner info because if you Google for it all you get are complaints about the burner and it is not even listed on Sony's site. Look down close to the bottom and it is listed there.

jmack17m,
Is your unit a Laptop? The reason I asked is that burner is a slimline and that is what they normally put in the laptops.

You might try re-booting between burns as that helps out alot if you are marginal on the ram side as you are. It also clears out the cache

Yes it is a laptop. I just checked it out and it is a re-badged liteon. However, in dvd decrypter, I went to change booktype and selected dvd-rom as the new booktype. It worked on the option for dvd+R but not the next write option. I am skeptical about wasting another disc as I have already wasted 8 in this trial and error.

@jmack17m - just passing by...

..one easy way to stop wasting disks is use Nero's 'simulation burns'. When you go to hot 'burn', tick 'simulation' and untick 'burn' - it will ask for a blank disc and go thru the motions of a burn without writing to the disc, and will generate a new log entry..
