My old Playstation 2 finally quit on me and I bought a new Slimline PS2. But now the component cables display a very distorted image. It's basically 3 separated images on the top half of the screen with 1 big black and white image in the background. I've set the output to Y/Pr/Pb and changed the DVD setting to progressive. DVD's play fine but games do not. What gives?
I know it's not the cables (Sony brand, new, 3rd set tried), or the TV is there some setting I'm missing somewhere? I called Sony and the only setting they told me about was the Y/Pr/Pb.
Any help will be appreciated.

Not really sure what you mean. I've purchased the Sony component cables. They look exactly like the cables that came with the system except the have 5 (Red, green, blue - video; red & white - audio) RCA plugs instead of 3 (yellow - video; red & white - audio). I've also made sure I'm not confusing the red video and red audio connections. I'm not really sure what else to do.

http://www.xbox-entertainment.co.uk/catalog/images/ps2avcable.jpg Have a look at that site, that is a standard cable that comes with the console, it has a scart adapter, that converters it into a scart lead, and if you just use the normal connectors it AV lead.
Yellow=Video Red+White=Audio
Have you tried this cable, are you 100% u are not mistaking the sound wire with video wire, if you did this once it can cause damage to the console, or even the tv. try on another tv, and see what happens.

Is SCART a European thing? I'm not in Europe. Is it DVI?
First off the (red, white), yellow cable that comes with the system is called COMPOSITE, the next step up is S-VIDEO,(red,white). S-video delivers a better picture because it separates the video signal into color and black & white components. The third option which delivers the best picture is called COMPONENT. Component, green,blue,red, (white,red) separates the video into red, blue and black & white signals. The more times you separate the signal the less interference is transmitted. S-video and component are capable of displaying Progressive scan, S-video at 420p and Component at 480p. 480p is the minimum resolution to be considered high definition, so only component, not s-video or composite can deliver a HD picture.
Progressive scan is a feature the essentially doubles the picture quality and is only available on digital TV's (i.e. HDTV's and EDTV's). "Regular" television is in the interlaced format. The difference in 480i and 480p is the 480i refreshes every other line every cycle (first 1,3,5,7,9...etc then 2,4,6,8...etc); Progressive scan refreshes every line (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...etc) every cycle. The lines are so small you hardly notice. 480p gives you the full 480 lines of resolution while 480i gives you 240 interlaced lines of resolution. The are also higher resolution available on newer technologies, 540p, 1080i, 720p, 1080p. Right now all HD broadcasts are in 720p. 1080p is a future technology that is starting to appear in some TV sets. The PS3 will be caapable of 1080p resolutions, the XBOX 360 will not. You must use a DVI or HDMI cable to achieve resolutions higher than 480p. DVI and HDMI offer all digital connections. This means signals are lossless. All other cables, even when connection 2 digital devices, must first convert the digital signal to analog and then back to digital. In each conversion some data (i.e. picture quality) is lost.
