As all you fans must know by now, for whatever reason, Men in Tights has not been released in region 1. Throughout the rest of the world, however, it has been released. As a big time Mel Brooks fan, i wanted this on DVD. So i bought the region 2 Men in Tights through ebay, ripped it onto the hard drive via Shrink, and burned it to the verbatim disc via Decryptor--all the while, of course, having anydvd running. Obviously, in Shrink, I set the region to "All Region," but when I play it on my stand alone DVD player, the screen is black and white and going up and down (think of an old television set that has a rolling picture that would be remedied by smacking it a couple of times). Does anyone know why this happens? How can i fix it?
I understand that my stand alone dvd player is only for region 1, but these 405 movies that i have been burning have always been set to "Region Free" and I've never had a problem like this. As a desparate attempt to try anything, I even set the region in Shrink to "Region 1" but alas no good. An interesting note: these discs play on my PCs (no surprise) but on one of them (the Compaq desktop), there is no sound.
Any ideas, fellas? I'd appreciate any kind of help. I really want this movie on DVD (as I'm sure most of you do), and i don't wanna settle for having to watch it on my laptop ;)
Thanks in advance.

It is likely in PAL format rather than NTSC and maybe your standalone player won't read it correctly.

Yes, it is PAL. Does that mean I'm screwed? If not, can I do anything about it? Will tweaking our programs do anything?
*edit*
Okay, I checked my dvd player. It's a Magnavox MDV456/17.
It states the following: "DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for Region 1 in order to play on this DVD Player. You cannot play DVDs that are labeled for other regions...This DVD Player will play both NYSC and PAL DVDs. You cannot play DVDs recorded in other formats. The color system of the DVD may be listed on the DVD or on the Disc case. Your TV must have the NTSC and/or PAL color system as well."
Doesn't that mean that this player should be able to play the "All Region" or "Region 1" burn that i made? Technically, it does (without any problem) other than the picture distortion on the television.
I'll look up my television info. It's a Daewoo DTQ-20U4SC/27U4SC
Any ideas?

You can try VSO DivxToDVD and where it says standard choose NTSC try and use older version, much quicker and no watermark 0.5.2.99

Thanks for the suggestion, gwendolin!
But, uh, I'm kinda new to this program (in fact, I've never used it before). From the default interface, the "source" file, do I select the ISO image i've created or do i insert the DVD into the drive and use that as the source. Regardless, I used the ISO image I created, and nada. It says, "Cannot determine the format of input file 'C:\Documents..."
Any tips? Sorry for the noob question on the program.
Thanks!
(PS I'm prining the guide as we speak.)

Does your player auto read PAL or do you need to change a setting via the menu? See the manual.
Does DVD Decrypter identify the burned disk as region free or does AnyDVD?

@ gwendolin: That was the version I found that I downloaded. I tried using the iSO image AND the actual disc, but it didn't work :( Once i open the folder for the actual disc, it presents me with numerous folders to tackle.
@ laddyboy: My second post is the only relevant information that my player provides concerning the regions and PAL/NTSC. I'm assuming it automatically reads NTSC since that is most common for N. America. Where does Decryptor or AnyDVD tell you what region it is? I thought I knew these programs well lol.
I appreciate the help, everyone! Keep it coming. Thanks!

In DVD Decrypter in the Read mode on the left side of the main window under the Source menu it should say Label:, and underneath that, Region:. If it's region free it should list all the regions, 1 thru 8. AnyDVD must be disabled though. Otherwise enable AnyDVD and then double click on the AnyDVD tray icon and the resulting window will have a list of the regions the disk is locked to.

@ laddyboy: Ah! I shoulda known that. Sorry. I always keep it on write mode. Anyway, yes, according to Decryptor, it's listed as Regions: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8--RCE Protection: No. Copyright Protection System Type: None.
Thanks again!

Gwendolin: from the default screen of the prog, in the "source file," i click the folder icon to open a file. I navigate to my DVD drive (which is titled "robin_hood_men_in_tights"); i double click that and presented with "Audio_TS" and "Video_TS." If i highlight both of those, and click open, it does open displaying the contents of both folders. I assume we're not supposed to head in that direction. Continuing on...back at the "Select a multimedia file" screen, if I double click "Audio_TS" I discover there is nothing in there. Back to where Audio_TS and Video_TS are located: if i double click Video_TS, I'm presented with 4 .IFO files, 4 .BUP files, and 10 .VOB files. If i select all of those and hit open, it brings me back to the original screen of the program. I set the standard to "Force NTSC 29.97 FPS" and hit convert to...discover nothing happened.
Descriptions are: "Output may not be available" "Can't determine the format of input file "E:\\Video...IFO"
Sorry for being a pest and for being such a novice :)

Well, I finally was able to convert the files. I must say, however, the reason why I was stuck at that screen is because the icon you have pictured next to those files was the "Unknown format" windows icon. You know what that is, right?
Anyway, yeah, it was converted but I can't burn what was converted through my video software. Am i able to use decryptor or do i have to use another program to burn the converted files?

Bump
Any other ideas? All the aforementioned suggestions did not work. I checked the videohelp.com site for possible code hacks on the DVD player. But alas, my Philips MDV 456 was not listed (or at least no codes were given).
