If I want to copy one of my movies I copy DVD 2 requires the use of DVD43 (or something similiar, although I don't know what that might be--I mean that works in its place). DVD43 launches with the desktop and sits there ready to use, too ready.

I have to turn it off if I want to just play a DVD becuase it freezes the drive. But it does the job if I need to make a copy: turn it off, play the DVD, turn it on, launch I Copy DVD 2.

At the beginning of September I applied a number of Micorsoft security patches, including one for Windows Media Player. Big mistake. Nearly all my CD-burning software stopped working, giving me error messages about buffer under-run for audio, and just burning nothing for data. (Record Now, the least-talented package on my computer, continued to work, so I got along.)

Deleting the patch did not help, but I think that little DVD43 smiley face might be leering at me, that something changed which now gives me buffer under-run. I noticed last night that WinOnCD worked again after I closed DVD43, but I don't know if that was a fluke or not. It's very frustrating.

Does this program have to launch when I turn on the computer or could I get the same functionality by unchecking it using msconfig and just launching it when needed for a DVD copy?

Brendan

Ps Yes, I am getting used to DVD Shrink, but I don't think it's compression is as effective. The best was DVD X Copy, but it's pretty old now, and I never know which of my DVDs it will work with.

Hi wehrung,
AnyDVD is a DVD43 replacement, and better. The only problem is it is not free. You can try it for 21 days, and then buy it if you like it. I started out ripping movies with DVD43 and DVD Shrink. Now i still use Shrink, but AnyDVD (red fox instead of the green smiley face) works much better. DVD43 would give me conflicts, and AnyDVD never has. I always leave it on in the background. DVD43 is no longer supported and AnyDVD is right up there cracking the latest encryption schemes usually before i can get my hands on the offending movie. You can always right click on the program and choose exit. That will temporarily turn it off, until you insert another DVD.

To answer your original question, yes you can just turn off DVD43 in the startup menu and then just start it when you want to use it, with a desktop icon or from the menu. That's what I do - no difference in function. That way you don't have it running in the background when you're not using it.

Unlike many people on this site, I am a completely happy "customer" with DVD43. It has worked on everything I have tried it on, including recent Sony movies, and has never given my any system problems. I see no reason to drop 40 bucks on AnyDVD.

DVD43 and AnyDVD seems to be one of those cases where you decide which one you want to keep, but not both. You can defeat the latest sony arrcoos protection with DVD Decrypter only, by using the protected sectors list

but you have to have a PSL for each movie in question. And AnyDVD/DVD43 has to be turned off for it to work. All using just decrypter. I haven't used it, but its there if i want to try a different way. AnyDVD works fine for me, just ease of use and no worry about some new scheme coming up that requires another program to decrypt it.
as far as compression goes Nero recode 2 is supposed to be a little bit better than shrink. There is alwasys DVD Rebuilder which can be very slow, but the quality is better than shrink as it is a true encoder, not a transcoder. We're talking hours to back up a movie. I use shrink most of the time, and Recode some of the time, and the quality is great. I don't have a huge tv 34" WS Sony, but copies made with shrink look just like the original to me. I use good media and keep the speed down to 4x burn most of the time. Shrink will kick out a copy in 20 minute to an hour or so.
