Hi narukid66. It's not really very hard to convert these files once you do it a time or two. The key of course is to have good converter software. I do most of my conversions to AVI (and some to DVD) using MPEG-1 as input. I have been using AVS Video Converter ver3.6 . There are more updated versions of this software available but this one works fine for me. This is shareware so it's not free, but I don't know of any freeware available to convert these files. To be sure, you may want to check out the software page because I haven't looked for a file converter lately.
The DVD files that you were mentioning should be located in a folder named Video_ts. All of the software that I have used will use the files it needs when you load the Video_ts folder as input. Since you are converting to AVI you will probably be using DivX or XviD to compress these files. This compression takes place during the conversion process so you shouldn't have to worry about running a seperate step to encode the DivX or XviD file formats. You will need a codec for at least one of these formats if you don't already have one. You can get them both as well as pretty much any other codec for other video and audio file formats in one of the K-lite codec packages that you will find on the AD software page. That's basically all there is to it.

You may also try ImToo DVD Ripper. It's not free, but lets you rip in many different ways:

Good luck!

You also can try with winavi video converter. Just select the .VOB file in the Video_ts folder, and then select DivX or XviD as the video encoder and mpeg Layer-3 as the audio encoder to convert.
By the way, winavi is shareware, but it also has free trial version. You can find it from http://www.winavi.com/en/video-converter/video-converter.htm
