What game is it you're trying to backup? and is it from an original disc or downloaded?

I doubt that the problem would be that your ps2 can't read at 4x especially with a laser fix installed.

You obviously have got nero? so try this:-

1) use dvd decrypter to get the iso to harddrive.
2) use nero burn image program to write the iso at 4x on the TDK media.

Some people have success with princos or whatever, but they're definitely in the minority, most people have really crap burns with them.. I'd advise ditching them for ps2 backups and using them for movies. If the TDK don't work, buy yourself a small pack of Taiyo yudens or ritek and see how you go with them... if they don't work then we can assume the problem is somewhere else... i'm sorry but it's all trial and error to see what works for you in particular.

Good luck, and let me know how you get on

[edit] sorry, I see you've already tried some ritek, it was a long post to wade through though :)

Do you have any backups that work? or is this your first attempt?

It could be many things. But if you haven't chnaged anything since you got your last backups to work, I'd say that the most likely thing is the downloads themselves...
You could try:-

1) burning an .iso that has previously worked.. this rules out a problem with the burner.

2) updating your firmware for the burner.

Another thing to remember is to turn off all the non-essential programs and the internet connection..this can interfere with the burn process.
I always burn my games between 4x and 8x on 8x rated good media like Taiyo yuden, ritek or verbatim media...and have never had a bad burn with them... but then again I know what my machine can handle etc.
Did you try to burn at 4x on the tdk? and you didn't mention what game it is you're trying to burn?
