most likely due to the KIND (brand) of media you are using...may i ask what brand you are using and it's suggested rated speed on the label? also, there might be some issues with HOW you are burning them onto the discs~ what programs are you using and what speed are you burning them? need much more info to pinpoint your issues and WHERE your problems begin~ :)

1) Media quality. The low quality stuff won't cut it.
2) Burn speed. Anything over 4x is inadvisable
3) Multi-tasking-Big no-no
4) Fragmented hard drive
5) Too large of burn target.Keep backup target at 4300-4360 mbs.
6) Paper/sticker labels,another big No-No
7) Dirty lasers-usually on stand alone players.
8) Burn program
9) Firmware update may be needed in your DVD-RW drive.
10) Programs you are using to transfer files into an ISO.
These are the usual culprits to your issues. There are many more possibilities as well.
Where does the freezing take place? While you view them on a stand alone player or on your pc?
What are you trying to backup?
First thing is verification. Verify which drive/s is having the problems.Play one of those backups on your pc using the same DVD-RW drive that burned it. Look in the vicinity of where the freezing takes place. That DVD-RW drive should play it and look near original. Also play one of those problematic discs on some other stand alone players and see how they react to it.Same thing, look at general vicinity of where the freezing occurs.
Second: Verify media quality. I have no clue of what programs you are using and what you are trying to backup on dvd. Use this free handy program to find the MID code of your blank media. It'll also tell us your DVD-RW drive model # and the current firmware version:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...
Third: Too fast burn speed! Keep it under 4x.
Issues on the end of your backups: Your backup target is too large. This means you may be burning the edge of the disc.Reduce that backup target size.

what BRAND of media are you using? i think the culprit lies here with bad quality media...
what is the model number of your Liteon drive, all firmwares are different and are MODEL NUMBER specific, for example, you can't upgrade firmware on a SOHW-1633S with the firmware for a SOHW-1693S and vice versa with ANY model Liteon drive~ :) you need to determine WHICH drive you are using and then i can link you to the most recent firmware for YOUR drive... :)

I'm a little confused about how you are viewing those backups when you play them.
Is that lite-on a player/dvd-rom/or dvd-rw drive?
I'm also curious to know the exact MID code/s of your blank media.I'm not familiar with x-copy.Use this free tool to find that exact media code:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...
Insert backup in dvd drive/Open up dvd identifier/select that dvd drive/click identify. Then click clipboard and paste it in your next post. It'll look like this:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:MAXELL-002-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Hitachi Maxell Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [MAXELL]
Media Type ID : [002]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]

Quote: tell me why on DVD-R & DVD-+ why does the movie freezes up in the middle or at the end of the movie during playback.
We've got to eliminate the media quality. Also tell us how fast you burned them.Test them on other drives and note how they play them, particularly in the area where they freeze up.The more drives, the better.
If it happens on both formats of media you are using,it sounds like a stand alone player issue if that is what you are viewing them on.
Edit: If you use your dvd-rw drive to find the MID codes of that media using dvdidentier, then also look for exact model # of that drive and the firmware. It'll be at the top, under Drive selection/dvd write capabilities. You'll have your burner model name/number/and to the right of it is the firmware version.

With that lite-on dvd player you need to be using verbatum, maxell or tiyo yuden media your going to have to experiment with -R vs +R if your drive will burn both. Also slow your burning speed down to 4X. Go here and you can see some disk quality test using diffrent media for your drive. cdrinfo.com

Try buying a newer DVD player This happens a lot if the player is more than a year old or so. I was having the same problem. I bought a new DVD player & I have no more problems. I don't think it has anything to do with the discs you are using. I buy the cheapest DVD's I could find. Usually cost about $30 for a hundred of them & since I bought a new DVD player I don't have freezing problems anymore!

You sometimes have to replace a dvd player from time to time. I've got the $36 wal-mart special magnavox. My brother and cousin got the same model as well as 4 or 5 friends at work and those babies will play everything you throw at them including dl backups! No Progressive scan, but a hell of a player for backups.Even cmags play perfect on them.
I had similar issues with my sony dvp-ns325 a few months ago. It was a hell of a player for a year and a half until the freezing occured withing 10 mins of my backups. That's where I had to verify them by playing in my tv recorder as well as my other pc drive and they played those backups perfect.
This narrowed it down to that sony player so I gave it a though lens cleaning which is a last resort in my book before replacement. It helped quite a bit, until I threw in my first DL backup and she froze up at the layer break. Again,I verified that DL backup on my pc/spare pc/and tv recorder and they played it perfect. That new Magnavox player took care of that issue.
Lots of things can happen when it comes to dvd backups. You have to verify which drive is having the problem, then rule everything else out 1 by 1.
If you're using the quality media and a sensible 4x burn speed, then that can help prevent majority of playback issues.

saugmon,
What is the best way to clean the lense - I was doing a search on this and this is one of the threads that came up. I also saw another thread where you were helping someone and you mentioned doing this.
So I was wondering if you can explain a safe way to clean.
-------------------
I am hoping I wont have to open up anything - as I am NOT technically inclined

After confirming that a drive is causing your issues and eliminating every other possibility:
I'd try using a can of compressed air. Pull the tray out and put the small straw into the drive and give it a few blasts.
If that doesn't help, try the hard lens cleaning discs. It'll have a small brush on the bottom side of disc and it'll tell you what to do after you insert it. I consider that hard disc cleaner as a last resort before replacing a drive.
As long as you keep the discs/pcs/and players clean, then they shouldn't need that hard disc cleaner for a long time.

saugmon,
Thanx for that info.
Im glad it is not as technical as I thought. But if I understand you correctly - you are saying to do these things only if you have problems, and not necessarily as a maintenace upkeep? (if it aint broke dont fix it - kind of thing).
I am only asking because I found out the hard way that it really is important to keep camcorders clean - and I dont want the same thing to happen to my dvd players.

I go by past experience. My first dvd player cost around $250 and it was a plain rca. The manual said clean the laser every 10 hrs or so of play. Being a dumb-a**, I cleaned it about every 6 or 7 movies with a hard disc cleaner. This drive did not last long, just until the warranty expired. It even messed up one of my original jenna vids! UGGH! Those lasers can be nocked out of alignment by those hard disc cleaners, that's why I consider that as a last resort.
Dvd camcorders, I haven't messed around with. I still have a sharp 8mm viewcam, LOL
One of these days though,I'll have to get one.
My original benq 1620 is still going strong with over 1700 burns and not a single cleaning.I just make sure any disc going into them are clean, and if they are dirty,I just use eyeglass cleaner and lint-free silk rags. I've got no cable or antenna.Everything I watch is on dvds and vhs tapes. The playback is critical for me and I am anal about the playback of my backups.I do test my backups in a slew of different drives.

Just a thought I wanted to throw in. I was having tons of playback problems. I went through all the steps given about media, updating firmware, latest burner program updates etc. In the long run, my problem turned out to be the CD Stomper Labels I was applying. As soon as I removed all the labels, I ended up with perfect playback.

Yep,#6: Those sticker labels are known to cause those issues. If you want to label your dvds, sharpies are the safest way. I use full hub printable media and the epson r-200 stylus photojet printer to print directly onto the dvd, after it has been burned.I get a nice looking disc as well as perfect playback.
Good luck and burn on!

saugmon,
Thanx for that tid-bit and feedback, it is much appreciated.
I have never cleaned any of my players and I have a couple that are very old and still doing pretty well 9knock on wood). But I always wondered if I should bother "messing around with them" as far as cleaning goes. So, after reading your feedback, I think I will not mess with them unless I have problems. And if I do - I am definitely going to start with the air can first.
Its funny because w/ my camcorder - I had a couple others before that had never given me problems - and I go and upgrade and 1 year later the stupid thing is not playing bak well and it seemed to be a head cleaning issue. Sometimes paying more is not always the best solution *LOL*
PS - I have been hearing alot of good things about using lightscribe and/or printable disks - they are all the rave - I have yet to try my lightscribe - I wanted to test it on some of my family videos when I get a chance.
----------------
pvzaja,
About a year and a half ago - I learned that same lesson the hard way too. I would test my disk as soon as they were done - THEN I would put the labels on and when I went to sit and watch the movie - it was a living - you know what *L* - I started re-tracing my steps and only could come up with the conclusion that it was the labels. I ended up taking them off using wd-40 and washing them clean, and they have worked again ever since - Hind site is 20/20 *L*

Hi guys, I also have a DVP-ns325 & is giving me lots of problems when playing my backups. The DVD-R plays well in my computer but it constantly freezes in my player. I'm using DVD-R TDK brand & memorex DVD-R @ 2X speed & both plays misserably in my player but ok in my computer. I already cleaned the laser in my player with a dry Q-tip but didn't do much... Is there any other adjustments that I can try before I throw this to the trash can???. Someone gave me this as a gift a year ago & I' will really hate to throw it away....
Thxs....

My sony dvp ns325 was a hell of a player, until time took its toll on her.I started with a tv recorder and had trouble playing my +rws in my apex player. That sony played everything from that recorder and 5 other pc DVD-RW burners. If it didn't play it,there was something majorly wrong with that backup.
Of course I use quality media like hitachi/verbatim/sony/and taiyo yuden. It started freezing at about 10 mins into the movies from all my booktyped dvd-rom and dash backups. When I slapped in some older, known to play perfect discs and they gave me the same issues, then I knew it was that sony player. I double checked them on the pc during playback and ran some PI/PO error scans and all led to my sony being the problem. The lens cleaning helped considerably, but my first DL backups really acted up. A new cheap wal-mart magnevox player took care of that issue. It even plays the crappy media very well.
Maybe run a hard disc lens cleaner. Those $25-$35 players play just about anything you slap in them!
