Hi. I've been burning movies onto single sided dvds with no problem, but don't like to use any compression and several movies just don't fit. I'm considering buying a burner with dual layer capabilities and some blank dual layer dvds, but am not sure on a couple things: Is DVD Shrink compatible with dual layer burners/dvds? If so, does the movie automatically burn to both sides or do you have to flip it over? When the dvd is done, does it play on home theater (non-computer) dvd players like a normal dvd or do you have to flip it over to play the whole movie?

Thanks very much. I appreciate the help.

Welcome to AD

You are not talking about a dual layer disc (DVD-9), you are talking about a double sided disc(DVD-5 on both sides of the disc). In the case of a Dual Layer disc you would not want to use DVD Shrink because it is a compressor, and would defeat the purpose of using dual layer media. All you need is DVD Decrypter...rip the movie in ISO->read mode and then select the MDS file and burn in ISO->write mode. The MDS file contians the layer break information.

If you want to use a double sided disc or a flipper, then yes you would have to take the disc out and flip it over during the burn and during the playback.

Once backed up using either method the disc would be viewable on most DVD players. DVD+R is the most compatible as it can be booktyped to DVD-ROM.

Thanks for the info, but I'm still a little confused. The burner I was considering buying is a "DVD+/-RW Double Layer" burner. So it's not actually a DVD-9? Would I have to flip these Discs over to burn and play them? Does what you said about not needing DVD Shrink still apply?

I agree that DVD+R booktyped to dvd-rom is the way to go to play on 99% of stand alone players out there, but not all burners are able to do this. NEC, Lite-On, BenQ, Plexor for the most part are able to booktype.

>>>>>Thanks for the info, but I'm still a little confused. The burner I was considering buying is a "DVD+/-RW Double Layer" burner. So it's not actually a DVD-9?<<<<

The terms "double layer" and "dual layer" are one and the same. The preferred term is "dual layer," but there are still those who persist in using the "double layer" terminology.

>>> Would I have to flip these Discs over to burn and play them?<<<

No. The blank disc would still only be capable of storing data on one side. However, it will be a DVD-9, which means it can hold almost twice as much info as the more common single layer (DVD-5) discs.

>>> Does what you said about not needing DVD Shrink still apply? <<<

Correct. Assuming you are just trying to do a one-for-one backup of a typical store bought DVD that you own, you can use DVDDecrypter in ISO mode to rip the entire disc to your hard drive, and then use DVDDecrypter again in ISO mode to just write the entire disc back to your blank dual layer media. No compression is needed in such a case, since it will all fit. Using this procedure ensures that the layer break on the original ends up in exactly the same spot on the back up version, and that "layer change" is the single source of the biggest headaches when it comes to trying to deal with dual layer burning.

Click on each of these to gain a better understanding of what we are trying to tell you: DVD-5 , DVD-9 , DVD-10 , DVD-14 , DVD-18 . Huh, well you can look up the last three in the glossary for the descriptions.

The question that you asked
Quote:
Is DVD Shrink compatible with dual layer burners/dvds?
And the answer is yes. However, DVD Shrink does not have a burn engine so you wouldn't need to worry about DVD Shrink being compatable as much as the prog which you are using to burn the disc.

These two questions make me think that you are asking about a DVD-10(see above). DVD Shrink does what its name implies, it shrinks the data to fit onto whatever size disc you are using. If you are considering using a DVD-9 or a DVD-10 you would not need to shrink that data because it will fit fine without compression.

If you are considering purchasing a new drive then there are several excellent drives out there that are just as cheap as the crappy drives.

I own the NEC model so I will be biased in my opinion of it. But the other two drives are also excellent drives and many people on this site own them and love them. All the drives mentioned are able to booktype(I think).
