I would like to copy a DVD-R that has probably been done with DVD2ONE. I believe it's best practice to rip the DVD-R rather than just copy it across. I usually use SmartRipper. Do I choose to copy all file with SmartRipper or just the VOB files and the VTS_01_0.IFO or do I also need the VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP and VTS_01_0.BUP files as well. I also presume if it has come from a DVD-R then I don't need to use DVD2ONE next as the overall size is within limits of the destination DVD. This will I hope answer the question if Nero creates the two BUF files and the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.

Thank's

Bob.

I am not entirely sure what you mean, but if you want to do a copy of a DVD2ONE authored DVDR onto another disk it is simple.

Open Nero.

Go copy DVD.

That's it.

If the files on the DVD-R total less than 4.37gb then just rip them all and burn with nero as usual. If the files total more than 4.37gb (which they shouldn't on a DVD-R) you will need to use dvd2one to compress the files.

I understand what you mean Loaded by a straight DVD copy in Nero. However I have read elsewhere that it's best to rip the copy rather thans a straight copy.

It's the files other than the VOB files that confuse me. I am not sure if all four files need ripping or just the one IFO file.

The term ' ripping ' means to remove the encryption from the disc, as u have an authored dvd-r (by dvd2one) then the files have already been decrypted (ripped).

These files are now JUST data files, so what loaded stated:
Open Nero.

Go copy DVD.

That's it.

Basically disc to disc copy should work now using nero.

Or If you prefer you can use dvd decrypter to create an image AND burn.

Or use smartripper and select the backup option and put ALL the files onto ur HD into a VIDEO_TS folder(uppercase) and burn with nero using the UDF/ISO (dvd) option.

There are other ways by making images using different methods but I have found the above work for me fine.
All these ways should work fine.

Hope this helps.

Thank's makes a lot of sense now. Out of interest, would smartripper warn if any files were encrypted if I tried the backup option. I am asuming a disk has been done with dvd2one, but it may not be the case.

dvd2one is not a ripping software, it only transcodes/compresses the data to a limit of 4.36Gb if it is larger than 4.36Gb (the version 1.0 can only do the movie not extras or multi episode discs) and authors the folder ready to be burned as a data disc to dvd.

hmmm, I do not know, I have never tried that, however, if the dvd-r HAS been produced from ripping and authored via dvd2one then I can pretty much say there WILL NOT be any encrypted data on the dvd-r, just pure data.

The encryption is a 'copyright' function so the ripping software used SHOULD have removed ALL encryption.

Try inserting an original dvd and go into backup mode and see what happens, actually I shall try it now whilst I'm online.

Yes in backup mode it does decrypt and shows the current key on the right hand side, I wonder what the difference is between backup mode and the rest, I think I know, it maybe so u can do the WHOLE disc in one hit, cos with the others u can stream seperate files/audio etc.

Good question. Hope it helps.

Just to clear this up:

Once a DVD has been ripped by something like Smartripper or DVD Decrypter, the encryption has been removed permanently and depending on settings, the region would have been removed also. After processing with DVD2ONE (which has nothing to do with ripping/burning but is a simple compression/authoring tool) you then have a burnable image, which will have no copy protection at all. This can be copied no problem with Nero in the wizard, or the New compilation window, using Copy DVD.

It really is that simple.

I copied a previosuly authored DVD yesterday ro a blank DVD-RW with Nero in exactly this way and it works fine.

Thank's Loaded. It's reasonably clear now. My main confusion was these IFO and BUF files and if they needed copying or not. But I think I have that sorted now.

One thing that suprised me though was in the burning stage. I have two types of media (I am still new to this). One is labelled "White label Gold Edition 2X speed" and the other is "Bulkpaq general purpose 1X speed". I only seem to have had any sucess with the Bulkpaq type even though it is the cheaper and what looks, inferior product. I wrote the 2X speed disks at 1X but the DVD player wont look at them. Is it because these disks are a 2X or just that they are crap for using on DVD players. In other words, do I have to buy only X1 to use them on a DVD player.

DVD2ONE needs the IFO file, as that points to the parts of the movie and keeps everything in order, it uses this to create the BUP (Boot Up File, I believe) and the new IFOs (ie authoring it) So you need that selected when you rip the movie in file mode.

With regards to the media, that is all dependant on what hardware and for that matter what software you use to burn. Personally I only use DVD-RW as I get bored of some movies easily and have purchased loads of cheap, but surprisingly good DVD-RW from the Czech Republic for less than £1 ($1.5) which work on everything I have tested (Thompson, Panasonic, Phillips), but leave that discussion for the DVD Media forum please!

Paul.

PS Oh yeah, I always burn at 1x

I also need some help to clear up a few problems; im new to this world. I have a dvd burner on my computer and bought dvd movie copy and tried to backup one of my dvds. Didnt seem to work said it was copyrite protected, i then used that dvd decrypter to do what ever it does, then tried to burn the files to dvd+r all i got when it was finished was a disk which you had to go into and open bout 5 seperate mpegs to watch the movie.

I no im missing a few stages in the process of backing up dvds could someone clear me up on what to do. Is there no magical software that decryptes compresses and copys them to disks all at the touch of a buton.

This would be a great help. Im cracking up.
