I sometimes put 2 different eps from 2 seperate DVD's together and burn them on 1 DVD. The two episodes are about 44 min long. So in theory both episodes should fit on a DVD+ or -R with no compression when I use DVD Shrink in the re-author mode. But I have run into in the past, a couple of times, a compression ratio of 85-87 percent, which is still an acceptable quality but I just wanted to know why there would be any compression at all on about 1hr 35min of video?

Any help would be great.
Have a great day Nitrox11

Run/Play time has no effect on compression. File size is what determines whether or not compression is required. It really depends on how the original video files were encoded to commercial disc by the video editors at the studio on how big each episode's file size turns out.

So in theory, it's possible to have a 30 minute video require compression. Not likely but possible.

@nitrox11, it like when you copy some older movies that are 2 hrs. 15minutes long and they require no compression compared to a movie today of 1 hr. 45 minutes that requires compression. Like zippyd said the way it was encoded, amount of bits it takes per movie, like the difference between DTS and DD, DTS takes up a lot more real estate than DD, yet I prefer DTS and know that I might have compression when if I used DD there wouldn't be any.

I did an older movie that was on a single layer DVD and under two hours, and yet the compression was showing 67% and only 2 channel sound. Just did Stealth movie only and left the DD sound and there was no compression. Go figure.

I'm planning on doing the older movie "Gone With The Wind" 2 disc set. It will be interesting to see how the compression comes out on that one. I am considering placing both discs on one DVD5.

Thoughts?

It can be done, because I did Titanic which is like 3 hrs and 45 minutes and used Shrink with Max Smooth settings and it came out pretty good.

@arniebear, I noticed the same thing with Stealth and another older movie. Stealth, with DTS, no compression...the older film Sister Act went to 65% and so I used Dvd Rebuilder Pro. Just odd how different movies and their content can be such drastic differences in compression. Have a good one my friend.
