AnyDVD - Nero - Burn time too long? 70 minutes

Hi all..
Current setup:
Win 2000 SP2
256 Ram
I have two DVD drives, one player and one burner
Player is BenQ 16X
Burner is Memorex 8x
Software used - AnyDVD & Nero
Basically to make my backups I place my source cd in the one drive and let it encode through Nero's RECODE application and it burns fine.
My problem is that it takes about 70 minutes total to do all this...
Now i see other people saying it takes them 15 minutes to encode, so what am i doing wrong? Am i using the wrong applications?
I would really love to still use ANYDVD as this is really the one application that i have paid for so far.
I have DVDShrink on my pc that i used to use and really not get into DVD Decrypter.
Any help is greatly appreciated....

Maybe others here will think that is a long time, but I do not--You could speed up the process probably by adding more RAM--You really have the minimum amount needed. If the burns are coming out OK--then I wouldn't worry about it--I keep burn speed to 4X and the encoding time varies by movie--usually 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, then the burn--Do not run any other applications during the process as that will really increase total time and could result in "coasters"--
Have fun--think about adding a stick of RAM

hey bud thanks for the reply, i will think about adding some RAM, and i dont run anything on this pc except for these apps... i have another pc for everything else that I do.
All my burns come out great, just trying to see how/should i be running faster than an hour.
Also, i have an 8x burner and 8x discs but Nero changes the max burn speed to 4x, i cant figure that out either....

No problem--
If you want, you could post your Nero log here and we could get a look at it--maybe figure out why it changes burn speed--But, 4X is what they recommend here anyway--If you do post log, edit out your serial number first--Have a great day--

With only 256RAM you're in a tough situation already. I highly recommend you to upgrade/add at least another 256MB or 512MB of RAM if you can.
Your other issue can be DMA, all your DMA needs to be "On" or "DMA if available" -- follow the below guide to bring/enble your DMA back On. In addition, if you would like a "super easy guide" on how to backup a DVD movies (DVD9) into any DVD+R/DVD-R (DVD5), then go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436 -- I wrote that guide specifically for Newbies only.
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" its driver ?for Win XP users? by alkohol))
Here are some helpful pictures for references.
A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER," left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE," left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
D) double left click on either ?Primary? or ?Secondary IDE Channel?
E) left click on "DRIVER," left click on "UNINSTALL"
You will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK," now "SHUTDOWN" or "Restart" your computer
F) once you restarted your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!
**NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "Uninstall" it from the ?DVD/CD-ROM Drives?
****at Device Manager****
(A) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
(B) double left click on your DVD burner or your DVD-ROM drive
(C) click on "DRIVER," "UNINSTALL," "OK" and then "Shutdown" or "Restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

thanks for the in-depth details about turning off the DMA on my pc.
I will def. look into adding more Ram as you are the second person that has told me this.

Hi alkohol i'm having the same problem i use fab DVD Decrypter and after DVD Shrink altogether takes about 5 1/2 hrs... im using my laptop which has 512 ram and is pentium 3 1.10ghz windows xp service pack 2... but the thing is my dvd burner is in a drive enclosure not in my laptop is that the reason why its so slow... would it be faster if it was installed in a desktop rather than a enclosure plz. help... or am mysetting the programs wrong...

I believe 5 1/2 hours is way too long -- there's a possibility that your DMA may have gone to PIO of Off mode. Did you follow my DMA guide from above to troubleshoot or enable your DMA back On? That is... if you're DMA is Off or PIO mode only.
Another thing that can slow down is make sure you don't multi-tasking or don't have other unnecessary programs/applications running in the background while you're ripping, encoding and burning. Try to "free up" more memory if you can by going to: START, RUN and type msconfig, then STARTUP, and put a check on any startup programs that you don't really needed it in prior to the burning process. Or you can press "ctrl+alt+delete" and click on "Processes" and disable/end process on any of the programs/applications that you're not using. This will definitely boost up your ripping, encoding and burning process.
For an easy guide on how to backup a DVD movie (DVD9) into a DVD-R/+R/+RW/-RW, go here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/256436 and have a look around. I'm pretty sure DVD Decrypter is still capable of ripping nearly 99% of the new movies (if you know how to use it).

Hi alkohol yes it is set to DMA but like i said my burner is connected by usb 2.0 it is in a enclosure wouldnt that be the reason it is slow cause i did do wut u suggested and its still the same... its weird cause its fast when ur burning cdr's and it is fast when i'm backing up ps2 games buts it's really really slow when im backing up dvd movies... to tell u the truth its the encoding thats the one that is really really slow thats where the big chunk of time is being consumed... once i think about the actual burning is about 1/2 to a 1hr and the rest is the encoding...maybe my settings is wrong...
