I just about pulled my hair out when I read all the info on here about good and bad media. I'd like some advice on my situation and any input would be appreciated.

I had been using an LG burner since I started burning DVDs in 2003. I used PRINCO media and always did a CRC scan of the disc after it was burned. I used this media because it was all I could afford at the time.

I recently found out about PIE/PIF testing and decided to change my burner for a BenQ DDW1640 since it could perform one. This drive is amazing and I think I'll be getting another one.

I've spent the last few weeks dealing with media and reviews from people out there. I am still unsure if I should act on my findings.

If I look at all my DVDs, it's hard to tell if they are degrading or if they were just burned that way since I have used 3 models of LG burners. I can rule out the very first drive because it went defective on me and I only burned a few discs. The other 2 drives never failed and the discs always passed the CRC scans. I burned about 500 discs and didn't have a single coaster. All the discs from the latest LG burner (4163B), all look the same, even from a 8 months ago or recently.

Going through my collection of PRINCO discs, most of them tested the same as the latest ones. However some of the older ones had a high PIE rate at the beginning of the disc. Most within spec of under 280 MAX PIEs. As for the PIFs, they were all well within range. The MAX PIFs were about 5-10 as usual.

Then I noticed I had some Yi Jhan 001 discs. These discs are definately degrading very fast and I am in the process of recovering all of them. I can see that these are pure junk for sure. After seeing these discs fail badly, I am scared of so called cheap media and am concerned if all my PRINCO discs will end up the same?

I recently bought a bunch of Maxell 8x discs with an ID of RITEKG05. If I compare the PIE/PIF results compared to Sony08D1; the Sony discs look great to me and I'd be very happy if all the discs were like them.

The RITEKG05 discs have a good PIE rate but the PIF rate is average compared to a real DVD. I have 3 spindles of 100 pcs of the Maxell?s so I don't want to get rid of them on a tangent!

What I'd like to know is....will the Maxell discs degrade beyond a point of return because of these errors? If they remain the way they show in the scans, I would be satisfied.
Can the PIE/PIF errors be a guide to determine if media will degrade just over time? Or, am I getting conflicting opinions of stories that are blown way out of proportion?

Maxell has a Lifetime Warranty on these discs but I'd rather have no warranty with intact data in the future just like anyone. I am kind of weary of burning discs that I may have to re-burn or even loose in the near future and I don't want to re-burn everything for nothing. Or, in the worse case, waste time now on this.

Here are some scans from my collection of DVDs using Nero CD-DVD Speed ver 4.10. Every disc I have ever burned was at 4x and I scan them at 4x. The RITEKG05 discs are from the same spindle. I tried to get better results with the RITEK media on the BenQ, but the defaults seem to work the best.

I can't offer any real advice to you as I am a relatively noobie myself, but I tried to look and you attachments (trying to learn what they look like), but none of them will open. Don't know if anyone else has noticed, and might just be my system, but thought you might like to know.

maxell , ty yuden, ritek, sony and verbatim is what i use. ive never had any problems out of these. be careful with memorex they use just about anybody to make their media (dvd). imo memorex is not reliable because of this--ive got burned a few times with them. and i dont plan to give them another chance.

I don't think anyone can actually answer your question. Except maybe Nostradomas...just kidding. The G05 is a good disk. I personally don't have alot of faith in scan reliability or consistency.

Unfortunately DVD burning is relatively new so we're all guessing what will happen really. I used Memorex when I first started and ran into the usual problems and now I'm a TY convert...but I have to say those Memorexs that did burn ok are still going strong today. I check them on a regular basis just wishing them to start cracking up but no luck yet.

Hi,
To be on the safe side, use verbratim, taiyo yuden, fuji and maxell made in Japan not Taiwan. Taiwan media is already half way condemn by the forum here. When you use verbratim ,ty, fuji and maxell made in japan we are definitely safe side so to speak.
I hope K666 or samgung will drop by and give you some advises you on what media you should use. Dont use memorex or princo becos they are junk media and even you burnt successfully, they were failed you on the long run.

Hi!

I have a question I hope some person might have an answer for me.
It's in regard to the media id of a 100 pk Maxell DVD+R on sale at play.com (A UK based company I believe).

I would like to buy these maxell discs, I have used Maxell in the past. Their 4X variant had a TY dye. The disc packaging looks identical too. But as the person stated, his dvd minus r 100 pk spindle uses the Ritek g05 dye (which I consider to be an excellent dye).

I am hoping that these maxell discs continue in the fine tradition of using good quality manufacturing dye from TY or Verbatim.

On another note about Verbatim disc's: I have used the versions made in India (mostly MCC 003 id) and can say that they produce wonderful results in my LG4120B and BENQ1640 and flawsless playback. I'd watchout for Verbatim 'pearl white' as they are made by CMC amongst others.

Just think that the best media's out there are

TY,

Verbatim,

Ritek (Ridata), then maybe Maxell.

In that order. I've had too many bad experience's & wasted money on using anything else. Just my 2 cents.

@Xtlee

Most of those scans are bad. Below is a comparison from Yuden and Maxell -- it looks like they're both on the same level. These are good, especially with only 2 on PI Failures.

Here is the scans from Nero CD-DVD Speed:

Maxell 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) Maxell-002-000 (Maxell's High Grade Media)

Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) YUDEN000-T02-000 (the famous Yuden Co. Ltd)

Well, all in all... it doesn't seem that they are bad, it's just that they are not as good as top notch media. If a pressed DVD is worse than TY media, then I think we are very picky about our media.

I'm just worried about the media with higher PIE/PIFs fading or going bad to a point till they have PO errors like the Yi Jhan media I had.

Here is Eric Clapton - Unplugged DVD to compare.

Also a quick note, this DVD is in perfect shape, the surface looks like brand new.
