hi all...an old newbie here and i need a lot of education!

i just purchased a panasonic vhs/dvd (bi-directional) recorder dmr-es40v...to make copies of old vhs and 8mm to dvd, then to pc for editing to put into my slide shows and/or dvds for family.

i am having a very difficult time, i am unable to load these dvd vob/bup/ifo files into premier 6.5. can anyone help me or point me in the right direction. i think i have to convert these files (vob) to either mpeg(2?) or avi files to perform any edit in premiere, is this right? if so how do i do this....do i need to purchase more s/w?

i am so totally new to all of this...and i thought this would be so easy...right! duh!
tia for any assistance anyone can offer...
best regards

Well First Off the VOB files on a DVD are Mpeg-2 so simply Converting the VOB files back to Mpeg-2 won"t help you because it isn"t the Mpeg-2 video that is stopping your From Importing the VOB files into Premier it is the Audio in the VOB files that is Stopping you because the Audio Format used on DVD"s is "Dolby AC3" which is not supported in Premier.....

You could use a Ripping Program Like "DVD Decryptor" to Rip the VOB files off of the DVD to your HD as a Single Big VOB file and then use a Mpeg editor like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" which can save the VOB file as a Mpeg-2 file but in the Process convert the Dolby AC3 audio to Mpeg-1 Layer-2 which premier can read...It would do this without affecting the Video quality at all and only Slightly affecting the Audio Quality......

You should realize that editing in premier will degrade the quality of the Video so if all you have to do is Simple Cutting and Pasteing and Re-arrangeing of Clips without any effects then you can do this without converting the audio or useing Premier and Looseing Quality by editing the VOB files directly in a Native Mpeg editor like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" and saveing as Mpeg-2 and authoring Back to DVD......

Bobi77581,
I don't know whether you can read Dutch? In that case you might have a look at my homepage http://home.hccnet.nl/g.van.schaik/ which treats the editing of DVDs created by DVD recorders (or hard disk recorders). The editing should be limited to clipping or combining ripped mpeg2 clips. For ripping of DVD recorder discs, DVD Decryptor is essential, for clipping/adding I recommend Cuttermaran on http://www.cuttermaran.de/.
Although true mpeg editing affects quality, for VHS clips the result is quite acceptable. The ripped mpeg2 files might be OK for premiere, when not, consider conversion to AVI via VirtualDubMod.
Good luck!

Actually True Mpeg editing doesn"t require you to loose quality , You only loose quality when useing editors that re-encode your Video Like Premier or Vegas Video but if you use a Proper Native Mpeg editor like "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" then you can edit to your Heart content on a Frame accurate Basis without Re-encodeing the whole File and Lowering the quality, You can even add effect and Transitions....
