Okay, my Pioneer burner died not too long ago, so I went to Walmart and bought a Sony 720A DVD+-RW burner. I bought a movie while there from the cheap rack, wait awhile. So later I finally get around to thinking about backing up. Oops, out of DVD-Rs. I go back a week or so ago and buy a spindle of really cheap Imation DVD-Rs. Yeah I know all the talk about media blah blah, but I've never really had any problems with Memorex and some other el cheapo brands. So I go home, DVD Decrypt to my hard drive without any problems.. it's a somewhat older non-sony disc, I then run it through DVD Shrink without any problems at all. I burn it with Nero 6. something and noticed a few things. First of all this burners minimum speed is saying 4x. My Pioneer would go down to 2x at least. Um, okay, well I did burn some movies at 4x with my Pioneer just fine, but did also eventually start having problems and so switched to 2x and that seems to help with that drive. This one is 4x minimum. Or maybe it's the media limitation that won't allow it to burn slower than 4x? No idea. I downloaded the latest firmware and updated my burner with it without any problems. Still minimum 4x. The actual problem is that 2 out of 3 burns now, after watching the entire things, have two or three areas where the movie locks up for a split second and then continues playing. My Pioneer did a similar thing when I was burning at 4x only with it the movie locked up for good and the rest of the film could not be watched. These last 2 just freeze for a moment and then play for awhile and freeze again and play again. 2 or 3 times in two burns. I haven't tested the third but I doubt it's going to play properly. The questions are:

Do you think this is a problem with my burner? During the burn I noticed the buffer drop down to 0% in nero and the drive buffer dropped down to 50% at least twice per burns. Unusual but they completed supposedly successful.

OR, do you think it's the cheap media?

The burn speed?

This thing is useless for me. I seldom burn data DVDs. I'm almost ready to buy a new burner and this one is brand new. But I know media can be an issue. I've just never had a continue problem with it before.

Suggestions?

I bet it's a media issue.

You should also check for a firmware update for your new burner. Use the last link in my signature block and make sure that your burner is up to date.

If you are looking for media that is reasonable check out the Office Depot brand as it is Ritek R03-02 - Excellent stuff. On sale ever so often so that you can get a buy 1 get one free cake box of 50. Brings the cost down to about a quarter a disc. :-]

Cheers.

I guess you didn't actually read what I posted lol. I know it was long, sorry.

Yeah, I updated the Firmware before my last burn hoping it would allow me to burn slower but no dice. I probably am way off since it's probably a media limitation. That was one thing I was curious about. I know burn speed is definitely something to consider.

Anyway, I will go buy some more expensive media. All I have time for right now is what Walmart carries though as the only city with any stores with Ritek media are quite some distance from me.

Can someone tell me definitely what is controlling the lowest speed of my burner? I can't find the box or documentation. I know, it's rediculous.

Maybe the pioneer's firmware and drive abilities were better matched to handle the media you were using. Sonys are usually re-bagged lite-on drives and they seem to be good. If you have updated your firmware, then the best way to see if it is a media issue is to try good media. Problem disappears, then it was the media, not the drive.

I have seen that statement or something like it in many posts where media was the issue/problem. Bad media can cause all kinds of issues in Nero and other burn programs (seems to be better documented in Nero logs than anywhere else). Maybe you had luck before, and got a good batch of bad media. Man, that sounds funny, but it happens.
All you have to do, to answer this problem for yourself, is to try just 1 disc of good media, and see if you see the problem on a good disc burnt at 4x. Skipping/freezing is one sign of either too fast a burn, or bad media/ scratched disc.
You can also bypass Nero completely for the burn if you have DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Once you set up Decrypter for the burn speed, it will stick with that speed until you change it again. I have the same problem with one drive in another pc. 6x is the lowest it will go in shrink, but i can force 4x by having shrink call up decrypter for the burn. Just an idea if you want to force 4x on the burn.

If you have DVD Decrypter why would you use Nero? Just use the write function in DVD Decrypter and set the speed and be merry. Under Mode click on ISO then click on the write tab. The cheaper the media the slower you do need to burn just to make sure everything gets copied.

Those riteks are closer than you think! Look at the labels of those maxells they carry. In the plus 8x format, the taiwanese labeled maxells will be Ritek-R03 and the Japanese ones will be Maxell-002-00,made by hitachi.

The dash maxell 4x-if there's any left, and the dash 8x maxell-Made in taiwan are also riteks. The dash 8x,japanese maxells are hitachi made Mxl-rg03.The dash 4x maxell made in japan are Ty-g01 and Mxl-rg02.Possibility of cmags on the taiwanese dash maxells though, slim chance of getting them.

They also carry sony. In the plus 8x speed, the japanese ones will by made by taiyo yuden with the MID code of Yuden-000-T02 and the taiwanese will be SonyD11-which are still very good. The dash 8x sony will be Sony08D1 from both japan and taiwan. Those maxells and sony are the only brands that I would consider at my local walmart, but cost too much.I can get them a heck of a lot cheaper.Look for made in Japan for the better ones.

View those backups on the pc using the sony DVD-RW drive and look for those issues. Majority of the time,it's those stand alone/s fault. They may need a lens cleaning.Test those backups in other stand alones-the more, the better.

Some of those stand alones do have trouble reading burned dvds.Poor quality media will magnify those issues.Memorex/imation=crappola.I've got some cmag memosux and playback issues are worse than my hitachi/ty/and ritek media.

My new el cheapo player will play my 8x/12/and even 16x speed backups using quality media.

Another thing, download the free version of dvdinfopro and run a pi/po error scan on your backups. You can get it here:
http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

With the higher quality media and these newer 16x drives,my scans have been a heck of a lot better at the 8x speed. The 2.4x speed is giving me the most errors!

Thanks for all the input. I actually just got back from Walmart, was leary of the Maxel (Due to price ha) but saw Sony and nearly grabbed it until I saw the price. Stupid me I just wrote a check over and was a couple dollars short, so I'm about to head back with more cash. I'll try the sony brand.

My player I thought about briefly, but it has always played anything I've thrown at it fairly well. Even out of standard bitrate projects I played with. But it's getting old so who knows. I gave my sister a disc and asked her to watch for freezes on her Phillips player so I'll have to see about that.

It's pretty lame that this sony drive is limited to 4x. Wow, don't think I'll be buying another Sony. I did try Decrypter actually and it was limited to 4x also. I only ever used it to burn backups that were DVD5 which is easy to image and burn. I'll have to see about setting Shrink to it though. I don't have a great love or hate either way for Nero. It's just that it does alot of different things. I'll try setting up Shrink to Decrypters later.

Off to try sony disc. Thanks.

To get the best quality, look for made in japan on those sony's.They will likely have both those countries all mixed together.

Wal-mart does not have specials on them. They will price match if there's a competing store nearby.
If you have:Staples/office depot/office max/wal-greens/kmart or a best buy, then you can get them a heck of a lot cheaper when they go on sale.

Another great brand is fuji, but only in the spindles marked Made in Japan.Taiyo yuden are on them. The taiwanese fujis are considerably lower in quality.
