As many on this forum seem to be when they finally post here, I am pulling my hair out on this one. I am trying to burn to DVD some .avi files I downloaded. The first few worked, then I keep getting a "playback restricted due to area limitations error." which is strange because the original stuff is not encrypted or region encoded. I saw a different post about this, but the situation seemed different. Here is what I have done:

I first tried converting them using VSo Avi2Dvd and then ripping with DVD Shrink and finally burning with DVD Decrypter. That had worked for the first batch, but has not worked since then. I have burned a number of discs and I keep getting errors. However, I know that it works on other files because it has worked for other downloads, just not on this particular set.

Then I tried DVD Santa and for whatever reason, it refuses to recognize the file saying unable to open.

I tried converting them to VOB files with Avi2DVD thinking maybe it was shrink. And then use FileISO, made the ISO image, then burned it with decypter, same thing.

I am going nuts, esp since this has worked with everything else except this one batch. It all looks fine on all the previews, so its maddening to keep getting that same error. Help?

sounds like your target area is set to high. the target area is the space from the area closet to the whole to the edge of the DVD your target area is probably set where it will go outside the edge or way to close to the edge. Change the setting to 4465gb on single layer discs.

- and that error is due to dvd regions ie you're trying to play a region 1 (usa etc) disc in a region 2 country (uk for instance)...

Thanks for the input
tdisom- I will look at that. I don't exactly know what target area is, but I will look for some kind of setting related to it and see if it works.

creaky, it strange because they are downloaded AVI files and when its brought into DVD Shrink, it usually removes any regional encoding if it were embedded in the file. These are TV shows not available in the US, recorded in the UK, but recorded OFF the TV, not from released DVDs. Are TV shows somehow embedded with regional coding? So I am still clueless about why this keeps happening.

I will try the target area setting and see if that helps. Any other tips?

curiouser,
Creaky is correct about the regions and since I just saw this thread I have a few questions.

Were the TV shows copied from a VHS tape that was made by a VCR? If so it might be a macrovision problem . Possible but not likely

If these are region 2 ( PAL ) did you convert to region 1(NTSC)? There are different framerates and to properly play you need to convert. Most of the conversion programs do a decent job but to properly convert you will spend $$$ for the best proggy's. Unless you really are picky about what you are seeing the lower priced programs should be considered

they are .AVI files of a british TV show downloaded from bittorrent. I have no idea how the files were placed on bittorrent or what the procedure is to do so.

if it is a PAL to NTSC problem that is giving that error, then at which point would I do the conversion? Before I convert from AVI to dvd, or when I encode the dvd Video_TS files to an iso image, or when I burn the image onto DVD and is should i be looking for a specific program that can do this. Or is this some setting i should click during one of these steps using the programs I have been? Any help so gratefully appreciated. Desperately wanting to see these shows and as there is no US distributor as of yet, no other choice. My computer screen is too small...

curiouser,
The prograam I have tried is below and also is free. It convert PAL to NTSC if that is what you need. If it is the correct format when you d/l'd it I now suspect you might have a corrupt file. Shrink and DVDD both will make them region free after you convert them
