I'm currently using a Sony DRU-810A to make whatever backups I happen to need. When I first started using this new burner, I had a problem where nothing would play correctly when burned at 2x speed, which was the lowest speed the burner would allow and the one that was recommended to me by others.

For some strange reason, it was eventually discovered that burns would work correctly when burned at 4x. Or, rather, -mostly- correct. There will be occasional moments where load time is delayed and it sounds as if the PS2 is having momentary trouble reading the disc. Music sometimes skips, and in areas where character models are streamed off of the disc rather than kept in memory permanently (RPGs when wandering around fields and such, etc.) you will sometimes note that it takes a few seconds for the model to appear, with them often materializing out of thin air once the disc is finally able to be read.

My question is thus... with 4x having worked when 2x would not, do you think it would be possible for the above issues to be corrected if I were to burn at 8x? I was always told to burn as slowly as possible, but I saw what this did at 2x, so I really would like to hear from the more experienced folk before I churn out more coasters. Thank you in advance.

Just make 1 test game, see if the speed works. Not all ps2's prefer games burned at low speeds, it just depends on your ps2, the type (+R or -R) and brand of media you use and your dvd writer i guess...
To give an example from my personal experience : I tried to burn a backup of Resident Evil :outbreak, and i tried 3 speeds before i got it right (the working copy was burned at 16x, after i tried 2x and 8x).
So, i'd suggest you'd just try a higher speed and see how it works out.

a couple things to try:

1. update your firmware to the newest version. i know it is new
but it still may not have come with the latest. That will help
a lot with media compatibility and success rates.

2. Also try some TDK or Philips 8X DVD-R DVD's
they work great for both myself and my friend who have Sony
burners (i have DRU-700A he has DRU-720A)
both of us needed to update our firmware before it really started
giving great results. The media you use can make all the
difference between good working games and duds.
I burn all my 8X DVD's with DVD Decrypter at 4X and never
have any problems at all, he also does the same.
you can get a 25 pack of TDK at Circuit City right now for $7.99 USD

I use unbranded MIJ Taiyo Yuden 8x discs for media, and they've always treated me well and came with high praise. Hence, I think I'm okay on the media front. I will try updating the firmware, however. I think that I tried to do this once already shortly after buying the drive, but I can certainly check again on the off chance that I'm mistaken.

I'll also give a test burn a try. It's common sense, yes, but I'm running low on media at the moment and I wanted to see if there were any definite yays or nays before I stuck my neck out. Seeing that burning at a higher speed has solved problems in the past, I can feel a little more confident in trying that here. Thanks for the advice, guys.
