I am trying to to store my many 8mm tapes to my computer. I use MyDVD Plus (came bundled with the computer) for capturing the tapes to my computer. I end up with rather large video files that can't go on the dvds. How do I shrink, split/join the different segments of the mpeg2 files? Any software for breaking down the files for saving onto a dvd disc? Was trying with VirtualDub but received error msg sayinh that

"Mpeg import filter:invalid pack at position 3:marker bit not set;possibly Mpeg 2 stream"

What does that mean? was I using the right program? At the moment the way I am capturing the video is quite tedious as I have to monitor the memory capacity as the video tape runs. Appreciate the help! Thanks in advance.

What do you Mean that your Mpeg-2 files can not go on to DVD??? Is it just because they are Too big??

When Captureing Video in Mpeg-2 format for DVD you should set the Capture bitrate Based on the Length of the Movie so that it Fits on a DVD as there is No Use Captureing a Movie and haveing it end up being too big to fit on a DVD as it makes the File Practicly useless unless you Plan on re-encodeing the File which would lower the Quality More than if you just captured it useing the Correct bitrate in the First Place...
There is No reason why you Can not Capture to Mpeg-2 and Be able to Fit 2 to 2.5 hours of Video on a DVD with acceptable Quality if the set the bitrate correctly...

Also "Virtual-Dub" doesn"t support Mpeg-2 editing ,Some versions can Load Mpeg-2 files but it will not save them as Mpeg-2 only AVI....

If you want to edit mpeg-2 files there are a Couple of Freeware Mpeg-2 editors that do Just Basic Cutting and they are "Cuttermaran" or "Chopper XP" or "Mpeg2Cut" which you should be able to find if you do a Google search....

As For Good Mpeg-2 editors that aren"t freeware then the Best is Probably "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005" as it can edit and Added effects and Transitions without Quality loss and it is easy to use but not free....

Good Luck

Hi Minion, how do I adjust the bitrate on MyDVD Plus? I video capture, I use high quality setting. I think I saw something like 2 to 3mb for each sec of capture. My tapes were recorded years ago using LP mode. Am I doing the right thing? ANyway to zip the files up? Appreciate your help and advice. Thanks.

I don"t have MyDVD Installed right now as it is Too limited for the stuff I like to do but there should be settings to set up a Custum Capture Profile and in the Custom Capture Profile you can select the Capture bitrate, If it doesn"t have these settings i would be very dissapointed in the software, Most of the Capture software I use has settings for setting the Capture bitrate by setting up a custom Capture profile or editing an existing profile.....

Good luck

Well the program i usually use when I want to capture directly to Mpeg-2 DVD format is "InterVideo WinDVR 3.0" which also will allow you to capture the audio directly to Dolby AC3 format which is the best format for DVD"s...

It will also let you Create a Custom Capture Profile so you can adjust the bitrate to what you want it so the Captured file isn"t too big for a DVD....

To Calculate what bitrate you should use when Captureing I use a bitrate Calculator called "PowerBit", all you do is Put in the Length of the Movie you are Captureing and tell it what audio bitrate you want to use and how many audio streams there are and it will tell you what to set the Video bitrate to so that the Movie isn"t too big for a DVD.....

Cheers
