I just joined and this is my first post on this forum, so be easy. I have a basic question. I have done a lot of reading, both on this forum and other internet sites, but I don't see anywhere that tells how the commercial DVD's are recorded. They play on 'all' DVD players, don't they? Do they use + or - format, or is it some other magical format?

They use DVD Rom. It is different from both DVD-r and DVD+r. Similar to CD's, you have CD Rom and you have CD-r. Basically the roms are not burned, they are pressed. They have big honking machines that press the disks out in huge quantities. None of those blanks would work in any burners, since that requires different technology.
