I have a Sony DVD±RW burner, but it absolutely refuses to burn -R discs!

I googled the model number (DW-U18A), and it cam up with quick specs for my drive. Sure enough, it burns -R discs. But mine won't! What the...

Anyway... I got upset, and flashed my loverly ROM from a U18A from Sony, to a Liteon SOHW-832S 8x8 Dual Layer DVD+/-RW. So now I can (supposedly, I say) burn dual layer dvd's (but who knows now, considering my run-in with the -R's).

Anyone got any suggestions?

Oh! and I did a search to see if anyone else asked this question, and I couldn't find anything. Just letting you know.

Losat--
What brand of the -R media are you trying? Some burners prefer certain brands--Use only top grade--Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and a few others--definately NOT Memorex--You say you flashed the burner with a Lite-On utility--I did not check, but are you sure it is the right one? I use only +R because it allows me to "booktype" so that my burned disks will play in anything--If you really want to burn the -R type, try a quality brand and let us know the results--lots of folks here to help--

Before I flashed it, the computer recognized it as a Sony DVD +/- RW DW-U18A USY1. It burns DVD +R, CD -R, CD -RW's just fine. Haven't trie CD +RW or DVD -RW's yet, but it certainly will not burn DVD -R.

The media I was using was Sony DVD -R (figured I would stick the brand name media in the brand name ROM), didn't work.

So I flashed it and it reads as a LiteOn DVD +/-RW SOHW 832S DL (dual layer) now, which, I'm fine with that as long as it burns dual layer discs. But, who knows if it will or not considering my run-in with the -R's... I have confidence that it will burn +R DL's though.

As far as this being the right utility, yep, I'm sure. Even my LED turns red now when it burns. The site that walked me through it suggests that Sony and LiteOn got this particular rom model from the same manufacturer.

But it just won't burn DVD -R's, probably -Rw's as well.

Just so very disappointing is all...

Losat--
You have me stumped--I recently got a Lite-On 1673 and I love it--I have not even tried the (-) media--Like I said before--I prefer the (+) format because I can "booktype" it so it plays on virtually every player--Now though, I am going to pick up a 5-pack of the (-) just to see if it works or not--Do you have a large supply of the (-) disks that you are trying to use?--If you are going to try the double layer disks, I would only use the (+) type for that anyway--Also do you have DVD InfoPro (Free)--great utility for checking disks etc.--Maybe someone else here could shed some light on this problem--I am off to get some (-) disks, just to see---Good Luck

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you (nearly a month later). Yes, I have a 50 pack of -R's that I can use, Sony brand. I bought them hoping it was the type of brand I was using before that wouldn't let me burn, but, it won't burn my Sony brand either.

I haven't tried burning the DL discs yet. But I do know this: *Anything* I correctly burn onto a + disc, works just fine in my stand alone DVD deck, and my PS2 (PS2 games and DVD movies). The only thing I haven't gotten to work yet is the Snes to PS2 emulator and Roms thing. But that's because I can't burn it right. My Nero program I have won't recognize my DVD drive when it comes to burning. It'll read it just fine though when I want to see what's on the media in the drive (from a pull down menu it shows my drive, so I can click and see). Just don't recognize it as a burner. But Nero's the only program so far that's done this.

hi, according to this - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272890 you're using a real old version of Nero, the late updates of version 5.x is when DVD burning was introduced to Nero. methinks you're gonna have to move to version 6.x (which costs) or use a.n.other burning program.

for now...let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

ps i've closed that other thread as we can fix all within this thread, spreading the problem over multiple threads is gonna confuse you and us

Hi there,

Download a small tool like VSO Inspector v1.1

It will tell you exatly what media your drive can Read/Write to.

DVDInfoPro is an other one !

If it does support DVD-R media, as mentioned several times above, use quality media and burn slow (4x max).

Use latest firmware and latest version of software !

Oops, sorry, didn't see that small ======== there...

So if Nero 5.x was when they were introducing burning, then is there something else I could use to burn it as an ISO instead of Nero?

...Imgburn can burn the .NRG file as an ISO, right?

dang, I don't understand it...

I've copied my PS2 games, and my DVD's, they ALL work fine. But I can't get this stupid Snes Station thing to work...

I downloaded ImgBurn, and it acts just like DVD Decrypter. I burned the .nrg file hoping it would be burned as an ISO, but it wasn't (or I'm doing something terribly wrong).

I'm gonna search for a nrg/iso converter...

It converts fine... DVD Decrypter writes it as an ISO to the disc I used for it, but my PS2 said it wasn't a PSX or PS@ format disc... So I tried writing to a CD-RW using the Windows based CD writing wizard, the PS2 just gives a Disc Read Error....

This is depressing.

i'm not sure PS2 would be able to read cd-rw's , PS2's are picky at the best of times

Also, when writing the Snes Station to a disc, does it matter if it's a CD or DVD? If not, then I'm pretty much screwed, if it does matter though, then all's not lost. The first ISO I wrote of it was to a DVD+R, that's when I got the incorrect format (dreaded red screen) screen on the PS2. I would totally understand this misunderstanding if the Snes Station can't be written to DVD.

I tried it a second time, this time around burning it to a CD-RW, again it failed. Except now it's a Disc Read Error.

I haven't tried a CD+R or CD+RW yet, not have I tried a CD-R. Which would be the best to use?

I make it sound like I've only burned this a couple times, but in all actuality, I've made about seventeen coasters to try and get this thing to work.

Any help much appreciated.

Gawd,

I feel retarded. Guess what I found (and I didn't even know I had it)? Nero eXpress 6.

Can I make the Snes station and burn it with this version of Nero?
