I have had my DVD-RW NEC 3520A for about 6 months now and the latest driver update is installed. The last couple of days drivers have just disappeared off my computer, I had to reinstall the USB's and the printer. Unilaterally, my drive has been giving me grief when I try to make copies for about 3 weeks now, (before the drivers disappeared) forcing me to use the lens cleaner several times before it would recognize there was a dvd in the drive. (I cracked that sucker open you should have seen those dust bunnies in there.) It has always worked fine, with the exception of the occassional troublesome dvd. Now when I place (mainly burned dvd's) one in the drive the computer fails to recognize a disc in the drive. However when I check the properties of the disc it tells me that the disc is in a RAW file system??? When I try to import into Nero Recode it gives me one of two error messages 1.)"Windows can not read from this disk. The disk may be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows." OR "Nero Recode 2 has encountered an error an can not continue. Invalid file name. This volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please be sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted." And apparently this is now the case for all the copies I own. I use Verbatim and Philips with very few coasters. I have and use Nero Recode, 1ClickDVDcopy, DVDshrink, DVDdecrypter but stopped using the last two because no more updates are available. I have not installed any new hard/software in the last few months. The dvd is not visible to either Media Player (just to play), Nero, or 1 click. But they play like they usually do in my stand alone dvd players. I am running windows XP SP2. I have been using this for 6 months with no trouble. Im wondering if whatever zap took place and wiped my drivers messed up some settings or is it just a coincidence that is unrelated and my dvd-rw just died? Any clue here?

Re: CD-ROM not reading CDs in XP

Your computer needs deleting of upper filters and lower filters in registry editor, follow following proceedure :

1. click start>Run>type Regedit and click ok this will bring the registry editor box.
2. export the registry file to my document inorder to have the backup coy of registry file. Now find the lower and upper filters using "Find" and delete both upper and lower filters and close the registry editor and reboot the computer this will resolve the issue.
(maybe}
Note: registry file export is under "file" in menu bar and "find" under Edit in menu bar.

wish u all the best.

Introduction
busTRACE Technologies has developed a simple utility that allows you to view which filter drivers are specified for the Disk and CD/DVD devices on your computer. This applet shows you those filter drivers that are specified in your registry. They may, or may not, be actually running. That is dependent on the driver itself.

This is a useful diagnostic applet for those users who have a need to determine which Disk/CD/DVD filter drivers various 3rd party applications, or Microsoft itself, have installed on your system. You can download this utility for free.

What operating systems are supported?
The software only supports Windows 2000/XP/2003 and above. The software is also compatible with the x64 versions of Windows.

Tried deleting the filters. Didn't work. I have found: first of all the firmware is up to date (not the driver ssshhh should I have said I'm kinda new at this?) OK second, I have no problems with my drive with regard to say a regular movie, I'm watching Polar Express right now. But I have many back up movies and for some reason the drive says they are unformatted, corupt or the drive is empty. This is driving me insane. I think this one might be toast but I can't imagine why it would only cease to read burned dvd's??? I have another on the way I would hate for the same problem to continue after buying another one.

some drives just have the same problem because it putss strain on the dvd drive and wears it out till it just doent play copied dvds at all. i have a lite-on sohw-812s dvd burner and a dvd reader that used to read copied dvds but wont read copied dvds anymore. It will read everything else including dvds and copied cds though.
