The PS2 version of NFSMW is NOT an online game - even though it has the online symbol on the front of the box...it's NOT online-enabled. It has no DNAS files whatsoever in it and it's also not on Sony's list of online games:

Taken straight from EAs website:

Race Online* Need For Speed Most Wanted features online play for Xbox 360, Xbox, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and the PC.

Unless that is supposed to say PSP instead of PS2 (in which case PSP has been omitted - since im playing it online on my psp as I type this) then it is an Online game.

I believe you, but why on earth would they put Online on the cover if its not?

Someone at EA should be shot; Thats false advertising on their part.

This does happen - it's likely due to poor communication between the design team and the marketing dept. I don't think it was meant to deceive the public but rather a last minute design change after they probably already had the covers printed.

Backyward Wrestling 2 also had ths online symbol on its packaging when it wasn't.

Anyway - an easy way to tell is to search for any files beginning with 'DNAS' on the disc (on titles after mid-2003). - if there's none, then you know it's not online.
