Hello forum members,

I recently purchased an Archos AV700 and I am having considerable difficulty converting .avi files (which I previously owned) into MPEG4 video files using Windows Media Player ver 10. WMP10 is very unstable and causes my system to crash quite regularly. The message I get is as follows: Error: Windows media player cannot synchronies or burn the protected file as the player cannot verify the license is valid. A problem occurred while contacting the internet to determine the current date and time. The troubling thing is, is that the file is not protected and as an example I receive this message when trying to transfer my wedding .avi file to my AV700.

I have down loaded and installed the supplied Archos MPEG4 Translator and Virtual Dub from my AV700 as directed and I am still having troubles. When using the MPEG4 Translator, I select the file I wish to convert, choose the directory location etc, and when I press START to begin the process I receive the following VirtualDub error ?No audio compressor could be found to decompress the source audio format?. After reading the supplied AV700 instruction manual it states that either of the following MP3 audio codecs (LAME ACM MP3 codec or IMA ADPCM Audio codec) need to be installed on the computer to be able to encode the audio track. Both of these latest codecs have been installed on my computer.

I have also tried pocketDivXEncoder ver0.3.5 and that seems to work ok, and uses an inbuilt VirtualDub perfectly however, I cannot transfer the completed MPEG4 file to the AV700 using windows explorer. I receive the following error message ?The .avi file type is not supported on this device. If it is a media file, you may be able to use Windows Media Player to convert the file to a portable type prior to transfer.? I thought it would be as easy as ?drag and drop? similarly to how I have been copying music and pictures to my AV700. Would I be correct in this assumption or do I have to sync with Windows Media Player 10 anyway to transfer the pocketDivXEncoded file to the AV700?

I have also updated to the latest VirtualDub ver 1.6.11 which has made no difference.

On a few rare occasions when I have attempted to sync with Windows Media Player 10, it actually starts to copy to my AV700 anyway. But this is a very rare occurrence and will work 1 out of 20 times. Also, I noticed that it doesn?t seem to copy all 100% of the file only about 99% leaving the crucial end parts of my video files missing. Can you explain why?

Can someone please provide further information and feedback on this topic as I am wanting to resolve this issue prior to giving this AV700 as a Christmas present to my wife.

Thank-you I look forward to your reply.

Kind Regards,

Mick.

what about youre audio files, are those synchonizing right with wmp?
i just use the video converter it came with and then drag and drop and it works okay though i was a little pissed when it said i had to do that when everywhere i read it said it played all media formats.

anyways, try downloading DivX to your computer, that might help the codec problem

I bought this device in the UK recently, I thought the supplied software was slow, and I also try to avoid anything which works in "harmony" with Windows Media Player. Sadly with the new version of Windows Media we are likely to be entwined!
I am currently laying down my collection of Who concerts and the West Wing, so that I can view whilst flying between jobs! I have purchased ($40) ImTOO DVD to MP4 Converter which was the only one specifically able to write to the AV700 device.
I am happy with its performance although it takes about 140% timewise to transfer
Audio is AC3 so you would need a converter to view on a desktop in WMP.
Results are good especially the stereo audio and video is also good when you get the angle correct!

Good Luck

Hi

I've got a AV560 but assume it's basically same as the AV700 apart from the screen size etc. On the AV560 you can set the unit to work as a windows media device or just a hard drive. I did the latter, I still use windows media player to sync music to the unit with no problems, but I just drag and drop video files. Providing these are AVI's (come up as video clips in windows and not windows media files) that seems to work pretty well. Try just dragging and dropping the video files onto the device rather than using WMP.

Unfortunately I had many countless troubles converting MP4's for the AV700. I converted many .AVI to MP4 but the AV700 wouldn't even copy them (drag n drop, nor synching with WMP) let alone play them. Sadly I recently took it back to the store and swapped it for a PSP which works flawlessly. I'm happy with the PSP, sadly howwever, there is not the 100G HDD the AV700 has.

Cheers for your replies.
