how to access usb flash drive w/ Xenium USB adapter?

I have a modded xbox with the xenium ice chip and the included USB adapter. I am on vacation and brought the xbox for my son to play and thought I could transfer files from the flash on my camera to the xbox.

The flash unit is a Sony Memorystick connected to a generic USB memory stick adapter to the usb plug included with the xenium.

When I boot the xbox the light on the USB adapter is lit but I have tried several programs including Xbox Commander (I'm not sure of the spelling of the name), and XBMC but can't find the drive with the pictures. I have noticed that when I tried the Avalanche dashboard (I usually use XeniumOS) the light on the USB adapter is not lit.

My first question is that should this work at all, i.e., accessing files from a USB flash drive? I assumed that it would, and second what software should I use to see the USB drive?
