when i turn the ps2 on (not the power button but the play button) it makes a churning sound but goes away when there is no game in the system. When i put a game in the churning sound becomes much louder and continues to make the noise as long as the game is in and the game does not load. it makes the noise when it tries to read the disk. My ps2 is probably a version 7 and it has a mod chip installed.
Interesting note: the exact same thing happened a few months ago and i left it alone for about 3 months and when i checked again it started to work for about 3 weeks but now it seems to be doing the same thing. any ideas why this would happen or how i can fix it? it doesnt seem to be the laser or is it???

The churning is probably the moter spining the disk. It get's louder and spins harder when it can't read a disk. That's why it probably sounds so loud when it reads. It sounds like your laser is having issues. The first thing to try would be to clean it with a q-tip and alcohol. That works a lot of the time with these issues.

is there anyway to clean the laser without having to take apart the ps2? where is the laser located? can i clean it by just opening the cd tray? also would you recommend using an air can to blow into the system?

The laser is in the middle of the tray. You can't reach it by just opening the tray. To really clean the laser, you will need to take it apart. It's a very easy process.
Yes, you can use a can of air to clean the ps2, but be sure not to point it at the laser!

Yeah, taking it apart is the right way to clean it. It isn't as complicated as you might think, the main thing to do is make sure you don't pull the ribbon out when you take off the top. You'll see what I mean when you start taking it apart. Once you take the top off you'll see another cover for the dvd drive. Get a small screwdriver and take that part off. Then, blam, the laser will be right there. A little alcohol and a q-tip, and I wouldn't be surprised if your ps2 starts working just fine.

The same thing is happening to me. Except it didn't really happen until I played a certain game (Madden '06). Ever since then, it's been happening moreso.

I have a version 7 also with a dms4 ezi pro and mine started doing the same thing. I got no video output and cd tray growled and grinded if there was a disc in it and did nothing if there wasn't a disc in it. What I found was that the part of the mod for the eject button ribbon cable had actually cracked the connector on the mainboard. It took some work but I had to fix that connection and it solved my problem. Hope this helps.

All of you with this problem, are you sure it's not the tiny "lever and screw" part which is next to the lens? 'Cause when that needs a change, there is that sound.

As I said, Mine was a problem with the connection of the ribbon cable between the eject/reset buttons and the mainboard. Check the ribbon cable for any damage or bad connection.

Yes, I read what you said. I just think that's not such a common flaw.

Hopefully that website will tell how to do both those things, cause I'm lost.
