Hey, guys.

I've searched the WWW as well as these forums, but have come up either empty handed or reading Greek, so I thought I'd ask for a bit of assistance....since you guys are clearly the experts.

So, my son plays games on his X-Box an has been throwing words around like "bridge" & "mods" & whatnot, and has asked permission to engage in these things. After reviewing many of the posts and seeing folks ask qustions about HOW, I'd like to simply ask WHY. Maybe even WHAT.

I have no idea what these terms mean since I don't game, whihc makes it near impossible to decipher anything I've found on-line. I'm lost as to what or who is "Bungie" or why one would want to "host" or why one sets up a network "bridge" and if that means my system will be acting as a de facto server and what the implications are for my 'puter's security and my status ith my ISP.

Sorry to sound so lame - I'm just the guitar player, guys. But any help will certainly be appreciated.

well bridging is simply where on halo 2 they lag u out of games and block your ip to give host to people. people mainly do it to get there ranks up. modding is where they change there maps by going into there harddrive.they do it for the same reason.

Thanx for the reply...however, I have no idea what these terms mean. As I said, I don't play games at all.

"Lag you out of games", & "...to give host to people" makes no sense to me. What I need to know is:

Is "host" simply an honorary title, or does this somehow set up my computer to act as a temporary server for a private game?

How does this effect my status with my local ISP?

Why would one wish to identify anyone's IP number, and just how many people/unique IPs will be passing thru to play a game?

Who/what is "bungie"?

Is there anything not "above board" about any of these practices?

Halo Ditionary

Lag out - when your internet connection gives up, gives out , or is gone

Host- mainly needed by modders so when u are playing a game you can use therir maps off of their hard drive(Xbox)

it doesn't

to help transfer files from comp to xbox

Bungie- creators of halo 2

Many thanx, bro.

OK, lemme see if I understand this:

One "bridges" so that one can be the "host" of a quasi-private game, allowing access to "mods" by other gamers who presumably want those mods (is this short for modification?) without modding their own system?

Furthermore, it won't get my son's account banned (since I paid the cash for it, this understandably concerns me - haha!), even if modding will?

Further still, it won't affect my status with my ISP - even if I have an access limit (I'm on cable so can only have 5 lines running before they kick my rates up). In short, even though it acts as a temp sever, the extra players don't throw the red flag to my ISP?

If it DOES red flag, I just need to keep those running thru the computer to UNDER my red flag limit?

Bungie is not a peson, but the entire team (or live administrators) of not X-box, but Halo 2?

Is that more or less correct?

Thanx again!

You Got it Pretty much hope i helped

And if he soft mods (modifies) his xbox he will get banned from matchmaking (thats where he takes his rank up) not from xbox live so not really wasting money but he will mis out on matchmaking games and only be able to custom games.

But if he hard mods lot more expensive and difficult you open your xbox to put in a $50 - 300 dollar mod chip that u can turn on and off that wont get u banned.

but since my account was with my money and i didnt care for matchmaking and i didnt want to take my xbox appart i soft modded hope i helped
yes bungie is the creators of halo 2

Yes, you helped tremendously. Thanx!

So, it is only his account that is banned. There are no hard-IP bans - right?

One more concern I have is security. If I understand correctly (maybe I don't, but...), since my computer will be acting as a temporary server, it puts all players (whether thats 1 or 100) behind the wall and gives them access to the computer itself (well, to anyone who knows how to utilize said access, like a moderately skilled admin or hacker).

How would a firewall like Norton or ZoneAlarm or whatever prevent unauthorized access if they are already behind the wall?

Is it better then to use an old machin stripped of personal data, etc., or am I mistaken in this chain of events?
