Ok, i've been doing a fair bit of research today and am still at a loss... so i'd like your opinions please. Most of all, i'd like to know why you choose the burner you do. I'm trying to decide between :
A) Lite-on SHW-1635S
B) Pioneer DVR-110D
C) Benq 1640
D) Plextor PX-740A
E) NEC ND-4550
Remember, most of all i want to hear your reasons for choosing this burner. Please try not to be biased just because you own one of these models. I'm not too bothered about price either, i'm mostly interested in burn quality (not too interested in ripping/burning speeds either).
Thanks

I definitely like the results of the LG Burner...But you also said it rates up there with Plextor and BenQ? Does this mean you consider these two models to be very good aswell?
More opinions please!

Benq 1640!
Why?
Experience! Having 2 benq 1620s with over a 99% success rate/burning on the fly on some/and main thing: Compatability on stand alone players/game consoles/and other pc dvd drives! They are phenomenal compared to my other 3 pc burners. My 1640 is performing just as great as my 1620s.The q-suite program controls the booktyping, wopc laser control, and Solid burn technology. The solid burn allows you to burn at media max speed, and not overburn it.The 1620s will do 16x burns on some 8x media!
It's the booktyping ability of benq that I love. This alters the plus format to dvd-rom, making them more compatable on stand alones than the plus or dash format. It's kinda like cheating, but my backups will play virtually anywhere I take them. It also gives you 3 different formats to burn!
Plextor 740 is a re-badged benq 1640. Benq builds them for the budget plextors.Booktyping capable.
That Lite-on also has the booktyping ability and is a very good burner.
Nec and pioneer are also great burners.I haven't heard much about the NEC 4540.
You've got a good list to choose from and they are all quality drives. You shouldn't go wrong with any of them.
Good Luck

Also, i noticed on the BenQ review you posted, they mentioned that there were PI spikes at the end of DVD+R discs created by the recorder? Has anybody else with a BenQ 1640 found this too?

Saugmon, thanks for your opinion, so far the BenQ or the LG looks my favourite, i think...I'm leaning towards the BenQ bt i think that's only because i really haven't heard much from LG (very unfair, i know!). Although the LG review was excellent.
What does everyone else think?

Yes, I rate the BenQ top notch as well. Plextor as saugmon says is a benQ so it should be great as well.
I just happen to have the lg in my system and I have flawless burns.
Booktypes as well.
As for longevity, I cannot address that as I have only had this custom unit since august 05. I have done about 400 burns with it though since then.
Good luck on your quest.

The spikes could be due to crappy media. I keep my backup target set as 4360 to keep burning the outer edge of the discs. Here's some of my pi/po scans of my 1640 using verbatim +16x MCC-004 media:
This is burned at 8x speed and is an excellent scan:
Here's at 12x burn speed, and another excellent scan:
Here's what some crappy media like memosux +8x cmags look:
That cmag scan was worse, but ok in my standalone player. Some other weaker players will have trouble with a quality playback from that scan.

OK cool, thanks guys, very informative! I think i'm gonna go for the BenQ for now, i think only because the LG looks a few months old and doesn't support DVD-R DL writing. Admittedly, the LG supports DVD-Ram writing but i think i'm going to be more likely to use the DVD-R DLs. The LG does look superb though...lol i'm tempted to go for two now :-P

If you are getting the 1640,you may want to get the +dl media. The plus format can be booktyped to dvd-rom and standalones will have a better chance to play them. The +dl verbatims are very sweet, and down to under $2 a piece when on sale. It'll also booktype +r and +rw.Another thing I forgot to mention, all 3 of my benqs will burn anything you throw at them!
To booktype, you'll need to download the q-suite program from the benq site. You'll also want to update that burner to the latest firmware because of some newer writing strategies.
2 drives are nice.Whether they are both DVD-RW drives or 1 dvd-rom drive along with the DVD-RW. Easier to make backups and possibility of burn on the fly when the need arrises. You basically set it,and forget it. Rom drives are usually better readers and takes a lot of the wear and tear off your burner.Dvd-rom drives are cheaper. You can get a good litey for around $20-$30
Good Luck
