Welcome to AD.
Standalone DVD players/burners are not equipped to break copyrighted DVD's. You need a PC, so you can apply the proper programs to circumvent the various encryptions found on DVD.

If you are still reading this, you do not have to go out and buy a computer to backup your movies on your stand alone recorder. What you need is a video stabalizer to hook up between your dvd player and your dvd recorder - you can get them anywhere from 50 - 100 dollars.
You will not have the freedom of backing up a FULL DISK - but you can back up the movie itself.
I hope that helps

Thats some good info ZhelpZ, I knew there was probably some technology out there that would allow you to do that, but since I wasn't sure about it I didn't comment on it.
I also misread the original post and thought he just had one combo drive.

Thanx LOCOENG,
Yep I have a stand alone recorder that I use all the time actually. What is funny, usually when all the encryption problems occur computer-wise with the new movies - the stand alone will do it as long as that stabalizer is hooked up.
But you know, like I said before, it will only do movie because it records in real time. (just like recording a tv show) And if you are just backing up for the kids or an out of town trip, you can put up to 6 hours on each disk if you want to.
It works for the VHS tape - to dvd conversion also - just FYI.
Dont get me wrong though, I still prefer backing up on my comp - its way more versatile - but for those who cant afford to buy new computers or dont want to hassle with the technicals of them, the stand alone is definietly the way to go.

How's the quality. Also in my area a cheap set top burner costs around $100-150, and PC's are equipped with burners for around $399 after rebates. I'm with you, I want full control of my backup.

As far as quality goes. I am happy with the quality.
With the DVD to DVD - the quality is the exact same if you only do one movie on there. If you happen to do a VHS to DVD the quality is anywhere from the same to better. Yes, really, I know you may not believe it but its true. But I just think it is because of the way dvd's are made to use, and lets face it - vhs tapes and equipment is so old - the tape continues to get worse while you dont have to worry about that once its on DVD.
If you put more than one movie to utilize the full 6 hours of the disk - it SAYS the quality is not as nice, but frankly, I have yet to notice that decrease. Maybe its because I usually do multiples for the kids to play with. The other multiples I usually do are from the camcorder to the dvd recorder and they dvd ALWAYS looks better than the cam-tape!
The biggest problem I have ever had after doing a disk, is on my very very very ancient dvd player - I can only Fast Foward on 2x. Any dvd player that I have that is 3 years old or younger - no issues.
If I was in a situation where I had to choose computer backup over set-top backup - it would be computer hands down. But I love having both! By time my kid turns 4 or 5 years old - she will be able to do her own videos on the set top recorder - it is THAT easy!
Let me see - these days, yeah you can pretty much get a decent one for like 150 - 200 dollars. But anything under 150 I would be weiry of because ppl do get what they pay for.
But you said where you are you can get a COMPUTER WITH the Burner for 400!!! WOW! For 200 more, I would definitely do that if I were in that situation. The cheapest comp you are going to get where I am is going to be closer to 600 absolutely no frills - maybe a dvd burner with it if you catch a sale.
