I've been successful playing and ripping many DVDs in the past using DVDDecrypter and Smartripper, but some DVDs seem to not be designed to be played in computers DVD-ROMs--yet will play on my stand-alone DVD player.
Does anyone know any way to play/rip these types of DVDs - hardware or software?
Thanks!

Can you provide some dvd movie titles? Some are "unrippable" because of a scratch or indentation on the disc. Some have Macrovision protection. 1 movie that wouldn't rip for me was "The Hunt For Red October". The reason why? DVD had a "serious" scratch on the cd. I changed my settings on DVD Decrypter to "ignore read errors, changed to 3, but a no go.

I tryed copying XXX but it would not copy. Smartripper said it could not uncode the 1st VOB file and DVD Decrypter just runs for about 5 mins and saids some type of I/O error.
with a whole crap load of letters and numbers a few lines down.

Then use DVD Decrypter. After installing, go to the tools>settings. Now go to the I/O tab folder and check the box "ignore read errors"
and change the software read errors to 3. Also clean the dvd disc.

Also check your ASPI Layer and your IDE Drivers, it can help fix reading error and boost performance!

The I/O error is referring to "read errors". Clean the dvd with non absorbant material such as rubbing alcohol and a light damp cloth. Insert the dvd and let it play for about 30 seonds. Open dvd decrypter and go to tools>settings>I/O tab folder and check ignore read errors and set software read/write retries to 3. if the disc has a scratch or serious indentation, then it will take some time to fully rip the dvd. Trust me, I've been through this routine a couple of times.

I'm also familiar with the "I/O error" and sometimes it can also be due to a bad ASPI layer which tells windows how to access the CD/DVD drives, that is the communication layer.
