Getting it modded and replacing your HD will keep your original xbox dashboard intact. I have a Xenium modchip and a 200gig HD in mine and with the push of a button I can turn the modchip off and on. So if I feel like playing some Xbox Live I must turn the chip off or risk getting banned forever.The cost was only $225(canadian)for both, 2yrs. ago. I would definitely recommend getting the mod. done.

I don't know about your HDD. Sounds like it's Toast! <=(

But, I'd recomend you just get a Chip, and the best Firmware to match it. This will allow you to run a HDD that's not locked (i.e. Error 06 Retail Firmware Code),. This will allow you to run Slayers 2.x or Auto Installer Pro on your XBOX?. reinstalling the M$Dash to the HDD, It's probably better to then use something like BoxPlorer to update the Dash again with a current XBOX Live!? Game again.

In anycase Slayers should also come with Configmagic. With this Program you should be able to relock the new Drive to your XBOX?. Thuss alleviating you of any more Retail Firmware Error Codes (i.e. 05, 06 or 07),...

Xecuter CE 3 => $55.99 + $6.95 shipping

Western Digital 160gig hard drive => $39.99

3 days wait for the modchip to arrive (within the states)

30 minutes of installation

TOTAL AMOUNT: $102.93 SAVED: $97.07 (MS charge $120 + $80)

Conclusion: now you are free to do whatever the heck you want to with your xbox => add games to the hard drive, play backups of your original games, etc.... list goes on..and on..

cheers
