I just received my TY from blankmedia.ca. Ive boguht from them b4 and did not have any probs. I have read the forum stuff on genuine TYs and the looked at the hub codes. All i could find were GG, GD and TY were the letter to look for. Well the ones I have right now say GH000123 . Im wondering if these are good too.

I ran disc thru dvd decryprt and they say media code is

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:TYG03]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [TYG03]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Im a little confused as the 4x discs are supposed to be TYG01 (according to supermediastore.com)and ive got TYG03. My poor ps2 cant read anything higher than 4x so I had to buy the 4x ones.

Can anyone enlighten me?

BTW this is my first post. Ive been a long time lurker. Im glad I fianlly read about you guys. I used to by just whatever discs were on sale at bestbuy but now i only get TY's :P

hi, i'm docTY, nice to make ur acquaintance~ :) i will be handling your Taiyo Yuden woes and questions today...hehehe

anyways, your 16x TYG03s check out just fine...did you ORDER the 4x rated DVD-R (TYG01s) but receive the 16x DVD-R instead????? i've heard of people receiving the TYG02s (8x dvd-r) for the price of the 4x DVD-R (TYG01s) paid, but, NEVER have i heard of a company sending out the 16x rated DVD-R for 4x DVD-R price????

must be diff. in Canada, as i'm here in the U.S., but my cousin lives in Canada and he's never received 16x DVD-R when he paid for 4x dvd-r~ :)

but, since the 16x TYG03s are not used ALL that much here (by me personally, but a few others tried them out with mixed results...i HAVE tried a 50 pack of them, but they were not very good...perhaps i got a bad batch, i quickly returned them using an RMA to meritline that took almost 2 weeks, so...it was a very unpleasant experience for me) :)

but, the inner hub coding DOES in fact check out...

4x DVD-R : GD000xxx
8x DVD-R : GG000xxx
16x DVD-R : GH000xxx
8x DVD+R : TG000xxx
16x DVD+R : (still waiting to get my hands on some, but will let everyone know once i do~ hehehe)

the "xxx" in all the hub coding stands for the numerical value "xxx"=numbers to identify the batch number in when they were created...the later batches might go something like this for example:

TG001234 (8x dvd+r) = manufactured more recently, hence a higher "batch number"...this holds true for all the other speeds and formats too~

you should be just fine with these TYG03s...16x rated DVD-R...the 50 i have used only like 5, returned the rest...i test burned them @ 8x and 16x...i no longer have the results, so, i won't post the results up here...but they were decent..about 95% quality on burned @8x and about 93% quality @ 16x if i remember correctly...i NEVER burn @4x onto media (unless it's rated @4x)..but THAT IS JUST ME, i do not suggest you burn these TYG03s @ 16x, and you COULD try burning them @4x if you want for less chance of errors..but, i've always personally burnt my backups faster than the general population here on AD...it's what works best FOR ME and my setup, everyone is different. :)

docTY~

Well it looks like they are NOT 4x. They are16x instead. This means they are useless to me. My PS2 cannot handle them. Ive tried 5 burns with these disks and it cant read them. I bought the 8x from the same venodr before (when 4x wasnt availiable) and they didnt work either.

Therefore I ordered some 4x when they were instock. It looks like they sent me 16x instead thinking well id be ok with them. SIGH.

MAybe i should just invest in a REAL dvd player?? :P

sorry, i don't even own a PS2, so i have no experience in what it WILL or WILL NOT play :P

but, the fact of the matter is, in YOUR CASE specifically, you are saying ONLY 4x rated DVD-R media works in your version of PS2? and 8x and 16x rated media will NOT work?

wish i could offer you a solution to this, but i can't...i have no experience with burning games nor do i own a PS2~ :)

but, your last comment MIGHT be a good one...you got yourself some GOOD quality media by sticking with GENUINE Taiyo Yudens, if you are burning MOVIE BACKUPS onto these discs, then i will STRONGLY suggest you get a dvd player (stand-alone) that CAN read burned dvds :)

relying on your ps2 to PLAY YOUR MOVIE backups can be hit or miss, and in your case, a definite MISS~ :) there are some really inexpensive dvd players out there that will play anything you throw at them, so, IF you are making backups of MOVIES/VIDEO, then get yourself a decent dvd player; IF you are making backups of your games, then, i have NO CLUE what to tell ya~ :)

docTY~

good luck
