MemCard Exploit/HDLoader

My question about the memcard exploit is: Instead of using GS2(I only have v3.1) or ARMax(don't have one) could I use a PSX GS that doesn't open the disc tray? Would I need to use CDs? [(A DVD with the exploit installer on it didn't seem to work..but my PS2 can read the discs.)(I tried a DVD I had burned myself to test it, it was even on a Maxell brand disc, the exploit was on Memorex.)]

My question about HDLoader(or a way to rip and play games to/from HDD) is there one/a way I could install from the PC, with the HDD installed?
