burning downloaded tv shows....how?

i have downloaded several of my favorite tv show. the problem that i am now having is that it is taking up too much space on my hard drive. i recently purchased an external dvd burner. i have no problem ripping and burning dvd movies but i cannot figure out how to take the avi files and convert and burn them to a disk. i have nero and ulead along with dvd shrink, decrypter dvxtodvd. i am new to this whole buring thing and if someone could be so kind as to walk me through it once, i would be very greatful. thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,
the tools you mention are more than enough for you to convert your AVI files to mpeg2 the dvd compliant format and then burn them to dvd.
what version of DivX to dvd are you running?
I think the first step for you is to give us the properties of your AVI files.Can you download avicodec and load one of your AVI files into it and then copy and paste the results for us to see in your next post.

This is the information that i get when i use avicodec. Does this help?

ok the next step is to download an encoder that will convert your XviD AVI to that of mpeg2 or the dvd movie format.
Heres a link to the trial version of vso DivX to dvd:

Load your file into this program, it is entirely up to you if you want to change any settings but i generally leave them as automatic, and then press convert.
see how you go.

ok...now that i have converted the file, is this the part where i use Nero to burn it to a disk? and if so, which program in Nero do i use?

A much easier way to do all of this is with DVD Santa. In DVD Santa all you do is pick the file you want to burn, AVI or whatever the file type(it converts almost all file types), and it will convert it and burn it for you. It only takes about 2 steps this way so it is much easier.

and if dvd santa cant convert the file where are you left jasper44,i have dvd santa and have found it somewhat lacking as a conversion tool.
@ryniie: do you by chance have nero recode?

its works great for tv shows though...when i miss a show i download it and burn it with dvd santa...thats all i use it for and it does that job well

Hello been reading these threads. I am in the same boat. I have already converted files recently from AVI using DivX to DVD which I think is nice and easy to use.
Have now got the resulting VOB files plus some others that I do not recognise.
My porblem is then burning these to disk tried putting just the VOB's to DVD but DVD player will not read this.
You seem to be of good knowledge in this area what am I doing wrong??

you cant just copy the files oer to dvd in any form, a dvd disk has to be layed out in a way for your standalone to read it properly.
if you open a commercial dvd disc you will see a consistancy with the layout.
ts_audio
ts_video { this folder is where you put your VOB files and ifo's bups/etc
but to make it easier, Nero creates this layout automaticly when you use the option in Nero to burn 'dvd video'
you will be presented with 2 folders the audio and video folder.
note: the audio folder doesn't get used, as the audio is combined in the same file as video.
so the audio folder can always be ignored.
once you have your files in the ts_video folder in Nero. then its ready to be burned.

if you want to take the easy road, just get Nero recode and select remake dvd:
locate your VOB files or (audio_ts/video_ts folder)by clicking the import titles button
you'll get a screen like this next.Siply highlight both and select add at the bottom or drop and drag or even double click then on

depending onn the type of files and whether or not they are compatible like 2 parts of the same movie, you have the option of merging them in to one file
simply highlight them and select merge.(just tidies it up a bit)
and this is the merged file complete

select next.Now its up to you where you want to place the files:
backup to hard drive
burn to disc etc.

thank you for your response. i am going to try it tonight and will let you know how it goes. Just curious---how many 40 min shows should i be able to get on a regular dvd+/-r using Nero recode2? i guess that i will find out....Thanks again

when i converted them down, it looks like i should be able to fit 3 maybe 4 on one disk. does that sound right?

so each file once converted with DivX to dvd = just under a gig.So 3 or 4 is about right.If you want to get more on change your disc to that of a dual layer 8.4 gig disc.Remember not to burn to the edge .

i ran it through recode and all it did was analyze and encode. it didn't give me and option to burn.
i have an external dvd burner and it was pluged in and turned on. i am running it through Nero rom. is this what i should be doing?

yes...it just didn't give me an option to choose the external burner. i think is was just a fluke, but it wtill was a concern. i will keep you informed to the saga as it unfolds.
