I'am trying to convert my dvd collection to .xvid format to save many gigs on my external HDD. By using the guide "copy your dvd to xvid with ac3 surround sound" I thought I would be able to do so. Untill the chapter with virtual dub no problem, but then it started. When opening the video tab and trying to select the obtion XviD MPEG-4 Codec, I couldn't find it. That obtion was not available. Is there someone out there who can tell me what the problem is and what to do to solve it????????

I have allready back-upd a lot of dvds to .avi, but when burning to dvd and playing them on my Divx player I only get video and no audio. Anyone have a solution for that part???????

Thx.

Yes, thx.

I just found out a few minutes ago that this was the problem (took some experimenting).

Maybe you know when going further, I get a complete different lay-out in Virtual dub. According to the examples I got from afterdawn I should get a XviD frame with tabs saying: global, qauntization, two pass, alt. curve, credits and debug. I don't get this frame, mine looks a lot different!!! Is this because of the Virtual dub version or because of the XviD codec? I installed the ones I found on afterdawn.

Thx again for your earlier reply.

i can't help with your virtual dub layout problem b/c i've never ripped my DVDs (i am planning to at some point, but with my memory it'll probably be 3 years before i remember!)

alt. curve was devapi-3, so basically the guide is using a really out of date XviD build.

.XviD is generally used as an extension for raw XviD streams. If you are using VirtualDub, it should be .AVI.

You might want to try something like AutoGK or FairUse Wizard. Doing things manually only helps increase quality when you know what you are doing. So if you are just starting out, like I said, I would go with AutoGK or FU. Besides this guide probably suggests using VFAPI and other out of date techniques.

Thx, for your advice.

I'll try them and see what happens. Because I'am no expert, I hope I can use your info.
Why doesn't someone place an up to date version of this guide on the site of Afterdawn? Especially for simple people like myself these guides come in handy!

Any suggestions where (what magazine or site) I can upgrade my knowledge on this part (convertion of dvd to .AVI etc.)?

Thx again to you all.
