Problem Sound from one side of Sony STR-GX800 ES

I have a problem with my Sony STR-GX800 ES. It seems to only output sound out of one side - and it doesnt matter what the sound source is. This amp / reciever is about 10 years old - and was pretty expensive (I am thinking it was about $800 when new) so I will pretty disappointed if it is a problem with the amp.
I have switched the speaker wires and this switches the problem to the other side. The sound is very muted and very crackly.
This machine has not been used at too loud of settings = although it has been left on for extended periods of time (overnight).
By way of note - I have NHT speakers and an NHT sub woofer.
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your thoughts.
I guess it could be in the wire - but the wire was heavy gauge and has not had any flexing to cause it to break or neck down internally.
I had unplugged the power and let it sit for 8 hours to make sure that any capacitors were discharged (I read of this on here for some problems and wanted to make sure - so left the power off overnight).
I had also cut off the end of the speaker wire and re-stripped it to make sure I had good contact. Also - I switched inputs and that problem stayed on the same side of the output so I proved to my satisfaction that it wasn't related to the input.
I took it to a professional today. Hope they can find the problem and repair it.

did you find out what the problem was mate?
i have a amplifier and get the same thing The sound is very muted and very crackly on 1 channel??
anyone help?

This was a common problem with older amplifiers that had balance pots; they simply got dirty and had to be removed and sprayed with contact cleaner.

Yea, but there are still some old classics kicking around that were and are awesome...not only did you get great sound, but you could heat your living room with it too! Pioneer, SanSui, Scott (are they still around?) and a couple of others made some a$$ kicking, great sounding equipment ... sure took a wrong turn over the years though!

its called technology....
my dad has some old carver and kenwood amps, things weigh like 500 pounds or so !
they even had handles on them.
he even has a pair of akai speakers, they are on casters, have 2 12" subs in them, real wood for the cabinet, they must weigh about 300 pounds or so, got them from japan when he was there...
i'd sure like to have them, but he wont give em up.. the tight a$$

To answer your question and give you an update on my problem - I found a good repair shop. :-)
They diagnosed the problem annd are waiting for Sony parts to fix it. I live in Salt Lake City but work in Portland Oregon area - so usually only get back at the end of each week. I have not heard an exact description of the problem but they quoted about $100 USD to fix it. This was well worth it to me.
I will post the more technical description when I pick it.
